JKD: You often talk about designing and building “the best” of something. What makes these the best iPad cases?

MS: While the term "best" is subjective, there are some objective qualifiers one can use to distinguish the best from merely good or just OK. One of the perks of having invented the Apple-specific case market is getting to see the products that are produced after you begin. Creating a market gives you an advantage. 

Mercedes Benz got to see every car that was created since their original "motorwagen" was first driven, unknowingly, by Karl Benz's wife. Being a first-mover allows you to see the response and respond in kind. Always staying one step ahead. 

JKD: Can you give us some insight into how you do that?

MS: For MacCase, building the best iPad cases is not just a marketing slogan or some other surface-level idea. First and foremost, we start with visionary design. We make sure the design will make a statement. We make sure it's original. We make sure it's a MacCase. 

Then we engineer it so it works. It needs to work for a huge cross-section of users who are going to use it in situations we've never dreamed of. We had one customer who wanted to use one of our iPad laptop cases on an oil rig site. Stuff like that.

It's very hard to design and engineer a product to meet the specific needs of a foreman on an oil rig while at the same time working for a corporate lawyer in New York City. But we do our best. 

Then we add our world-class, ethically sourced leather hides, sourced from the Himalayan highlands. Sew them together with the passionate hands of a third-generation leather craftsman. Obsess over the quality and deliver on the promise of that original concept sketch with a case that improves the customer's life. 

Do that successfully and consistently you'll have what could be considered the best iPad cases. Is every piece is our line the "best" case to every potential customer? Of course not.

JKD: You have two genuine leather iPad laptop cases on this page that are specific, custom-fitted for the iPad Pro and two that are not. How can they all be "the best"?

MS: My background is in fine art. Before I became a designer I was a painter. As a painter, I never cared about anything other than making the absolute best image I could. Not about what was going to happen when it was finished, who would buy it, etc. Someone either loved the painting or they didn't. If they liked it and had the means, there was a sale. If not, there was no sale. But you keep painting. 

As a designer, my worldview had to change slightly. Different customers have different needs. The world is not as simple as "do you love this painting or not?" I cannot believe the myriad of ways, conditions and situations our customers use our products in. It can be overwhelming. 

This broad range of situations calls for a multitude of what designers call "form factors" or styles. Not every bag is going to be right for every person in every situation. And I am grateful for that.

This allows us the chance to offer many styles and hopefully one of those styles, custom fit or not, will be the best genuine leather iPad case, brief, or crossbody bag for a whole group of Apple tablet users.

So to answer your question, the idea of "the best" is relative to the person making the consideration. Once they get past whether they love the aesthetics, the question becomes does this product function the way I need it to? 

You go down the list and start checking off boxes on the list of needs and wants. Eventually, you get to the point where 85-90% of the boxes are checked. If this happens, you have the best product for the person with that particular list.

Of course, the next person comes in with a different list, a different set of needs and wants. Having a unique assortment of models like we have put together  allows that potential customer to find an iPad laptop case they can start checking boxes off their list as well.

MS: For the most part, the feedback is extremely positive. It's hard to sell things like this online. Our products are all about the touch and user experience: the more you touch them and the more you use them, the better they get. 

I am very thankful to the customers who take that leap of faith and purchase a Briefcase or a Flight Jacket and then call or write to tell me it's the best iPad case they've ever owned. 

Again, there is no way to design a product that will work for every person in every situation. I don't even think a paper clip, as ubiquitous as it is, can make that claim. 

Any criticism of the products comes from the desire to have the case fit into the customer's life and day in an even better way. Of course, adding this feature or that feature might not make the case work for the 10 other people that purchased.
