iPad Pro 11 2022 Case- Behind the Design
The latest in a series of interviews about the story behind the design of MacCase products. For this interview, we are speaking to MacCase President Michael Santoro about the new Premium Leather MacCase iPad Pro 11 2022 4th gen case.
JKD - Apple released new iPad models 18 months ago. At that time there was a delay and Apple pushed out the release of their Pro models. This time they came out on time. Was MacCase ready?
MS - Whenever we come up on a scheduled refresh or update window, we get ready. We never know what Apple will do but we are always ready to react. For 2022, we got the least amount of change. This update allows us to continue what we are doing unhindered. We just need to update all the information so people will know we have 11-inch iPad Pro 4th generation cases in stock.
JKD - MacCase has been making cases for Apple tablets since 2010. What have you learned in the last 12+ years?
MS - That I'm insane Jody, you know that. (Laughing). The fact is I decided long ago that our brand was going to stand for something. You know I don't have a lot of patience for marketing and the hyperbole that goes with it. We don't follow trends, we don't chase the latest fads. We just do what we do.
If that's all you are going to do, you'd better do it well. If people are not going to love you because you are trendy and make them feel hip and cool, you'd better be great at the other side of that coin.
The iPad Pro 11-inch Case for 2022
JKD - So what is MacCase great at then?
We provide this timeless, flawless experience through how our products are designed, engineered, and crafted. No one can deliver that experience quite like we do. For almost 25 years, it's been our sustainable competitive advantage. It's in our DNA. After all this time, it's still what gets us out of bed in the morning.
To remain true to that cause, you have to address issues when they arise, as this one did. It took a little while but eventually, we figured out what we needed to fix and fixed it.
Our philosophy is that if we are going to do a new design, let's make it the best case for iPad Pro 11 available. Some of the changes are things people asked for and others are just evolving the excellent design we did for 2018 and 2020.
JKD - Can you speak about some of the other changes?
MS - The material we use for our trays to securely hold the tablet in the case is very flexible. That is one of the reasons it's such a great material for this particular job. Its flexibility allows it to absorb impacts.
For the 2nd generation 11-inch Folio design, we added what I can describe as a wall of this material to the outside edge of the tablet. This is where the Pencil charges. For the 2nd gen tablet and pencil, this was not a problem. We improved the integrity of the tray for people living in warmer climates and it had no adverse effects.
For the 2021 iPad Pro 11-inch case, we removed the wall to allow the Pencil to once again contact the side of the tablet to charge. It turns out that something changed between the 2 generations that didn't allow the Pencil to charge when laying against the wall of the tray. Maybe Apple moved a magnet or two. Who knows?
The point is, it was negatively affecting our customer's experience. So again, to remain true to our values and what we stand for, we redesigned the tray so everything works again.
For 2022, this design will carry forward and it has been extremely successful.
2022 iPad Pro 11-inch Case with Pencil Holder
JKD - Like its older brother, I see that the 2022 11-inch iPad Pro case will be offered with or without the front panel magnets. Has the Magnetic Accessory System been a success for the 11 models?
MS - Yes, I would say so. We would not have continued it if it wasn't working. It's a bit of a hassle to do from an inventory and management standpoint, but customers love the idea of adding features and accessories to their case to meet their needs on any given day.
As you know, I am in close contact with the customers and I do frequently ask about their use of the Magnetic Accessory System and get both positive and negative feedback. Mostly positive though. The negative stuff is usually highly individualized, like, " I'd love to have a place to put my bowling ball. Why isn't there a pouch for that?"
Interestingly, the accessories purchased by the 11-inch users are slightly different in their mix than those purchased by the users of the 12.9-inch tablet. Everyone loves the Pencil holder but the 11-inch users love the cable pouch whereas the users of the larger tablet love the document holder.
JKD - So the Magnetic Accessory System is carrying over. What other features will make their way into the 2022 Folio?
MS - And it turns out, quite a few. As mentioned, we've updated the tray and made sure it provides a flawless experience for our customers. The new tray is once again wrapped in our classic pebble grain black or authentic, distressed vintage hides. Both are ethically sourced leather that we're quite proud of. Every case is still made by hand, one at a time. Our contrasting white stitching is carrying over as well.
In the end, there is nothing radical here. The 2022 leather 11-inch iPad 4th generation case is an evolution. We started with an exceptional design that we have improved to reflect the needs of our customers.
MacCase has been making a Folio for Apple's tablets since they were introduced in 2010. For 2022, our newest designs encompass our 12+ years of design and engineering leadership in Apple portable protection. With its world-class quality, attention to detail, and superior protection and functionality, it's the best iPad business case available at any price.
The fact that we have this wonderful suite of accessories including our Pencil holder only makes the product more appealing. Whether you're headed to the local coffee shop to check email or face-timing with colleagues on the other side of the world, no folio is more adept at protecting your iPad while providing a class-leading experience than our 2022 iPad Pro 11-inch cover.
Finding the Best Case for iPad Pro 11-inch
We often receive questions about our products and what makes them so good. The reviews for many of the MacCase models are stellar and potential customers are curious. One potential customer was very open about his experience with other brands of Apple tablet cases. He was on a mission to find the best iPad Pro 11 case for 2022. He stated:
"The Pad & Quil product used a very thick leather cover material, was stitched very well, but had NO edge protection. The 3M mounting adhesive system simply "glued’ the back of the bare iPad to the inside of the cover...meaning, no edge protection. And I could never get used to the strap.
The MacCase 11" Premium Leather Folio uses the best leather I’ve seen. The padding is just the right thickness and closes authoritatively onto the surface of the iPad (I count five small round magnets under the inner padding of the lid). A polymer tray is used to hold the iPad securely in place.
I spent a while on the phone with Michael at MacCase who discussed the uses of all available tray and shell materials. Polycarbonate was considered, but in time, it cracks. Silicone was considered but dirt and grime built upon its surface.
The polymer material selected for use in this folio is strong enough to hold the iPad securely especially in the corners and along the bottom but is thick enough and elastic enough to act as a rubber bumper of sorts along the short edges and bottom.
The top edge of the iPad is uncovered just enough for the secure attachment of the new Pencil. Additionally, the flaps of the folio extend past the long edge of the iPad just far enough to cover the pencil, ensuring that it won’t get knocked off its attachment point to the iPad. Of course, you can go for the optional Pencil Holder that mounts to the front face of the over.
The Vintage leather is natural and unfinished....and very soft. It will show scratches and in time natural oils from your hands. Regardless, it is in my opinion the way fine leather should be showcased.
Since it’s prone to drying out more quickly, Michael recommends treating it every 6 to 12 months with the same product used on baseball gloves, boots, and tack. If you take the time to read this review, I think you’ll like this Folio as much as I do. "
We'd like to thank Mark for taking the time to write such an extensive review. It was so extensive that it did not fit into the standard product review format on the product page. So we included it here in its entirety.
What Size is My iPad?
If you're looking for the best case for your iPad Pro and are unsure which model or size you own, there is a quick and easy way to find out. Lay your Apple tablet flat on a table, take a ruler and measure the screen diagonally. You want to measure the part of the screen that lights up, not the black bezel that surrounds the screen.
Measure the size of your screen with the ruler from corner to corner. For the 11-inch iPad Pro, the lit part of the screen will measure 11 inches. This is how you will know what size iPad you own and which size case you need.
Will my 11" iPad 3rd generation case fit the 2022 4th generation M2 chip-equipped model?
Yes. Despite the major update to the internal hardware, the exterior dimensions and small exterior details remain unchanged for the 2022 4th generation 11-inch iPad Pro. This allows your 3rd generation case to fit and work perfectly with the new model.
What is the best 2022 iPad Pro 11 case?
The best 2022 iPad Pro 11 case is the one that meets and exceeds your individual needs as an Apple tablet user. These needs should include the level of protection, overall quality and durability, overall aesthetic appearance, man-made or natural materials, and overall functionality.
Will my gen 2 11" iPad case fit the 2021 gen 3 M1 chip-equipped model?
If your 11 case is designed to fit the 2nd generation of the 11 Apple tablet, then the tablet should fit. The fit may not be perfect as Apple moved the speaker position between gen 2 and gen 3. There is a chance that using a gen 2 case to hold your gen 3 may slightly block the speakers.
Will my first-generation 11" iPad case fit the 2021 gen 3 M1 chip equipped model?
If your 11 folio-style case is designed to fit the 1st generation of the 11 Apple tablet there is a high probability that the case will not fit the 2021 gen 3 11-inch iPad Pro. Apple changed enough between the first generation and the M1 equipped, gen 3 model to prevent compatibility.
