The Best Sleeve for iPad Pro 13 with Magic Keyboard
The Magic Keyboard makes a large tablet even larger and leaves the edges of your iPad Pro completely unprotected during transport. The MacCase Premium Leather Magic Keyboard Sleeve was designed specifically to address this. It fits your 13-inch iPad Pro M4 or M5 with the Magic Keyboard attached, protecting both in a single, elegant, slim leather sleeve. The integrated Apple Pencil Pro pocket keeps your stylus padded and secure under the main flap, not dangling on the outside of the case.
The magnetic closure releases with a single pull. Slide your iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard in, close the flap, and both are protected. MacCase has been building sleeves since 1998, when we launched the first Apple-specific portable sleeve design.
Do I Need an iPad Sleeve?
If you carry your iPad Pro or Air inside a larger bag, backpack, or briefcase, yes. A folio case or Smart Cover leaves the edges and corners of your tablet exposed to other items in your bag. Keys, cables, chargers, and other accessories can scratch, scuff, and impact your tablet during transit. A padded iPad sleeve creates a dedicated, protected compartment for your tablet regardless of what else is in your bag.
A good iPad sleeve protects against:
• Scratches and scuffs — from keys, cables, and other bag contents
• Minor drops and impacts — layered foam padding absorbs shock before it reaches your tablet
• Dust and debris — magnetic closure keeps contaminants out
• Spills — exterior leather or nylon provides a first line of defense against minor liquid exposure
• Bending — a rigid padded sleeve prevents the pressure-induced flex that can occur when a 13-inch iPad is carried in an unpadded backpack against your spine
iPad Sleeve vs. iPad Case: Which Do You Need?
An iPad case stays on your tablet during use. An iPad sleeve is a transport and storage solution. Your tablet goes in when you're moving it, comes out when you're using it. If you primarily carry your iPad Pro or Air inside a bag or backpack, a sleeve is the most practical protection solution. If you need protection during use, for note-taking, presentations, or field work, a leather folio case or a protective case with pencil holder is the better choice.
What Makes a MacCase iPad Sleeve Different
Perimeter Bumper Piping
Every MacCase sleeve features perimeter bumper piping along the edges. This a structural detail that absorbs minor impacts before they reach the corners of your tablet. This is the most vulnerable area of any iPad during transport and the most commonly overlooked detail in competing sleeve designs.
Integrated Apple Pencil Pro Pocket
All Premium Leather MacCase sleeves includes a centrally located, fully padded and lined pocket for Apple Pencil Pro. Unlike elastic loops or exterior pen holders that leave your expensive stylus exposed, the MacCase pencil pocket sits under the main closure flap, protected by the same layered construction as the tablet compartment itself.
Ethically Sourced Leather
MacCase leather sleeves use full-grain and top-grain hides sourced from ex-dairy cows, vegetable-dyed, and traceable to origin. Not bonded leather, which is scrap leather and vinyl mixed with bonding paste, cut into panels, and sold as "leather." Real hides develop character and patina over time. The MacCase Premium Leather Collection launched in 2007. It was the first line of Apple-specific cases to be made from the natural material. Many of those original pieces are still in daily use nearly two decades later.
rPET Nylon
The nylon sleeve option is built from rPET which is made from recycled plastic bottles converted into a durable, tear-resistant, weather-resistant fabric. Lighter than leather, equally protective, and backed by a 10-year warranty on seams and material defects.
Expert Insight: Designing the MacCase iPad Sleeve
We asked MacCase President and multi-award-winning designer Michael Santoro what went into designing the MacCase iPad sleeve:
"When it came time to design an iPad sleeve, we were at a crossroads. Do we follow the design vocabulary of the laptop sleeves with our signature window, do we do something that more closely aligns the new case with the tablet model we already had, or go off in a new direction altogether?"
"Well, form follows function or in this case, form is function. The need for a place to store the Apple Pencil suggested a vertical pocket that could be integrated into the overall design of the case."
"The best iPad sleeve also needed to protect and be easy to get the tablet in and out of. We know our hides are tough. We know the way we layer our materials provides outstanding long-term protection. We know our perimeter bumper piping will absorb impacts along the edges. We took nearly 28 years worth of knowledge and applied it."
"When the smoke cleared and the dust settled, the new sleeves looked very similar to the original sleeve we did for Apple's original tablet. This was not intentional. The MacCase design aesthetic is based on timelessness. We strive for this in every design we do."
Again Michael shares: "Our attention to detail is unparalleled. Our hides are world-class to match the build quality. Why are we so meticulous and obsessive about something as simple as a slipcase for a tablet computer? It's our passion."
Who Uses a MacCase iPad Sleeve?
The Commuter
James, a financial analyst who commutes daily into San Francisco, carries his 13-inch iPad Pro M5 in a shoulder bag alongside his MacBook. Crowded BART trains are high-impact environments. People are constantly moving, bags are colliding, and sudden stops just exacerbate potential problems. His MacCase leather sleeve creates a dedicated padded compartment that protects his tablet through all of it.
The Student
Sofia, a second-year architecture student, carries her iPad Air M3 in a backpack alongside textbooks, a water bottle, and chargers. She's not always careful about what goes in alongside her tablet. Her MacCase nylon sleeve creates a protected compartment regardless of what else is in the bag and regardless of how the bag gets handled between studio and lecture hall.
The Creative Professional
Dante, a freelance illustrator, uses his iPad Pro M5 with Apple Pencil Pro as his primary creative tool. Between client meetings and studio sessions, his tablet and stylus need to be protected and ready. The integrated Apple Pencil Pro pocket in his MacCase leather sleeve keeps the stylus padded and secure during transit, charged and ready the moment the sleeve opens.
The Professional
Ingrid, a management consultant who travels weekly between New York and London, carries her 13-inch iPad Pro M4 and Magic Keyboard in her carry-on and occasionally in checked luggage. Her MacCase leather magic keyboard sleeve is slim enough to slide into her briefcase for client meetings and protective enough to check with confidence. The leather exterior complements her professional image without announcing itself.
The Traveler
Marcus, a travel photographer, moves his iPad Air M3 through airports, buses, and field locations across multiple continents. His MacCase nylon sleeve handles turbulence, baggage handling, crowded transit, and temperature extremes without complaint. The rPET construction is lightweight, weather-resistant, and backed by a 10-year warranty, exactly what long-term travel demands.
The Minimalist
Yuki, a product designer in Tokyo, prefers her iPad Pro M5 bare during use, no case, no cover. But she still needs protection during storage and transport between her studio and client offices. Her MacCase leather sleeve is on when she needs it, off when she doesn't. The thinnest, least intrusive protection solution that doesn't compromise the experience of using a bare iPad.
