Why We Created This Rating System
Not all device protection is created equal. A $25 hard shell case and a $350 premium leather messenger bag both claim to "protect your MacBook," but what does that actually mean? We created the MacCase Protection Rating System to give you not only transparent, objective data about what level of protection each product actually delivers but the reason why it does.
Our ratings are based on three decades of designing and manufacturing premium device cases, real-world testing, material science, and feedback from thousands of customers. from first-year students to Fortune 500 IT departments. Every product is evaluated across four critical protection factors and assigned an overall rating from 1-10. How We Rate Protection
Each MacCase product is evaluated across four critical protection factors. Scores range from 1-10, with 10 representing the highest level of protection achievable in that category. You can discover how iPad and MacBook protection has evloved over the years by exploring our design history and innovations.
Impact Protection (Weight: 35%)
What it measures: The product's ability to absorb and dissipate shock from drops, bumps, and impacts.
How we test: Impact tests , padding thickness measurements, material compression testing, shock absorption analysis, customer feeback and reports.
Rating scale:
7-10: Multi-layer padding, reinforced structure
5-6: Substantial padding, protective structure
3-4: Moderate padding or hard shell design
2: Minimal padding, basic impact resistance
1: No impact protection, cosmetic only
Scratch Resistance (Weight: 25%)
What it measures: Protection against surface scratches, abrasions, and cosmetic damage to your device.
How we test: Material hardness testing, abrasion resistance, real-world wear simulation, interior lining analysis, customer feedback and reports.
Rating scale:
7-10: Premium leather or hard shell exterior, ultra-soft interior lining, zero scratch risk
5-6: Durable exterior, protective lining, minimal scratch risk with normal use
3-4: Standard materials, adequate protection against most scratches
2: Basic protection, some scratch risk with rough handling
1: Minimal scratch protection
Corner Protection (Weight: 25%)
What it measures: Specific protection for device corners, the most vulnerable impact zones.
How we test: Corner impact tests, edge coverage analysis, reinforcement structure, corner impact absorption, customer feedback and reports.
Rating scale:
7-10: Reinforced corners, full edge coverage, dedicated corner protection zones
5-6: Good corner coverage, protective edge design
3-4: Moderate corner protection, partial edge coverage
2: Basic corner coverage, minimal reinforcement
1: Exposed corners, no dedicated corner protection
Water Resistance (Weight: 15%)
What it measures: Protection against rain, spills, moisture, and liquid damage.
How we test: Water repellency testing, seam analysis, material porosity, splash and rain simulation.
Rating scale:
7-10: Water-resistant materials, sealed construction, protects against heavy rain and spills
5-6: Water-repellent treatment, good splash protection, rain resistance
3-4: Moderate water resistance, protects against brief exposure
2: Limited water resistance, vulnerable to sustained moisture
1-: No water protection, avoid moisture exposure
Overall Protection Rating Explained
The Overall Protection Rating is a weighted average of the four factors above, with Impact Protection weighted most heavily (35%) since drop damage is the most common cause of device failure. The formula:
Overall Rating = (Impact × 0.35) + (Scratch × 0.25) + (Corner × 0.25) + (Water × 0.15)
This weighted approach ensures the rating reflects real-world protection priorities while accounting for all critical factors.

FAQs
Can I trust these ratings if MacCase created them?
Transparency is our goal. We're not claiming every product is a 10/10, our own Hybrid Case rates 6.5 because that's what it's designed for. We'd rather help you choose the right product than oversell the wrong one. Our 30-year reputation depends on honest recommendations.
Why is leather rated higher than nylon in most categories?
Full-grain leather offers superior scratch resistance, natural water repellency (when treated), and exceptional durability over time. Our premium leather cases also feature thicker padding and reinforced construction. However, nylon excels in specific applications. Our nylon backpacks score highly due to their structured design and dedicated laptop compartments.
Does a higher rating always mean a better product?
Not necessarily. A 6.5-rated Hybrid Case is perfect for someone who wants minimal bulk and basic scratch protection. A 9.18-rated Messenger Bag would be overkill for that use case. The "best" product matches your actual needs and usage patterns.
How often do you update these ratings?
We review and update ratings annually or whenever we make significant design changes to a product. Material improvements, construction updates, or new testing data can all affect ratings.
Do these ratings account for different MacBook sizes?
Yes. Ratings reflect the protection level for the specific device size the product is designed for. A case rated 7.6 for a MacBook provides that same level of protection regardless of which size MacBook you're looking to protect and carry.
What about warranty coverage?
All MacCase premium leather products include our lifetime warranty, which covers material and construction defects. While this doesn't affect the protection rating itself, it does provide additional peace of mind. Learn more about our warranty policy.
Do you test competitor products?
This rating system applies only to MacCase products. We can't make claims about competitor products we haven't manufactured or tested ourselves. However, our methodology is transparent. You can use these criteria to evaluate any case.
Our Testing Process
Every MacCase product undergoes rigorous evaluation before receiving its protection rating:
1. Material Analysis
We test material properties including tensile strength, abrasion resistance, water repellency, and durability under stress. Premium full-grain leather, rPET nylon, and co-molded polymers each have distinct protection characteristics.
2. Real-World Simulation
Products undergo wear testing that simulates months or years of daily use, repeated opening/closing, compression in bags, exposure to elements, and handling stress.
3. Customer Feedback Integration
We have 28+ years of real-world, in the field performance data from thousands of users combined with customer reviews, warranty claims and constant feedback and suggestions. Real-world results inform and validate our lab testing.
4. Comparative Evaluation
Products are rated relative to each other and to industry standards. A 9.0 rating means objectively superior protection compared to a 6.0 rating, but you may not need that 9.0 rating to meet your protection needs.
