The Sleeve Question: How MacCase Rethought Messenger Bag Protection

Every messenger bag on the market puts a padded sleeve inside the main compartment and calls it protection. MacCase rethought that assumption twice, once for nylon and once for leather, and arrived at two different answers.

In the nylon line, the bag includes a built-in padded laptop or tablet compartment as standard. For users who want a higher level of device-specific protection and additional versatility, an optional custom-fitted sleeve drops directly into that built-in compartment creating a "sleeve inside a sleeve" design. The laptop or tablet now lives in its own precision-fitted environment inside an already-padded compartment. Two layers of protection to deflect any impacts or abrasions that may occur during even the roughest transports.

In the leather line, the bag has no built-in sleeve. It is a single open main compartment in the traditional messenger style, large enough to serve as an overnight bag. The custom-fitted leather sleeve is a separate product, bundled with the bag at a considerable savings. The sleeve and bag are designed as a system but function completely independently. The sleeve can be carried alone, placed inside a roller bag, used inside a different bag entirely, or hand-carried. The bag, without a built-in sleeve consuming interior space, is large enough for an overnight trip. This versatility is what sets MacCase Messenger Bags apart.

rPET Nylon Messenger Bags

MacCase introduced the nylon messenger bag in 2003. The current generation is handcrafted from rPET nylon, recycled polyethylene terephthalate made from post-consumer plastic water bottles and trimmed at every touch point with Black Vintage full-grain premium leather. The leather handle, pocket flap, and zipper pulls are not decorative. They are the points of highest wear contact on any bag, and full-grain leather outlasts other materials at those points by years. The combination of rPET nylon and full-grain leather touch points is a deliberate engineering decision that reinforces the long-term quality, not a styling choice.

BrightSight: The Interior You Can Actually See Into

Every MacCase nylon messenger bag features the BrightSight interior. This is a  high-visibility, light-reflective interior lining that makes the contents of the bag visible in low-light conditions. Most bag interiors are dark, black or charcoal, which means finding anything at the bottom of the bag in a dim environment requires removing items one at a time. This can be a cause of high stress. The BrightSight interior reflects ambient light back into the bag's interior. In a parking garage, a darkened hallway, or a dimly lit conference room, the contents of the bag are immediately visible. MacBook Messenger Bag: Sleeve-in-Sleeve Protection for MacBook

The MacBook Messenger Bag adds the optional custom-fitted MacBook sleeve to the Universal bag's feature set. The built-in padded MacBook compartment holds the laptop securely without the sleeve. Add the optional sleeve available in 13", 14", 15", and 16" and the laptop moves into a precision-fitted, fully padded, water resistant nylon environment inside the built-in compartment. The sleeve has a seam tape perimeter bumper that absorbs impacts at the most vulnerable edges. iPad Messenger Bag: Sleeve-in-Sleeve Protection for iPad

The iPad Messenger Bag is sized and configured for tablet-primary users. The built-in padded tablet compartment holds any tablet including 13-inch iPads with Magic Keyboard. The optional custom-fitted iPad sleeve, available for 13"/12.9" tablets, drops into the built-in compartment for the sleeve-in-sleeve configuration. Premium Leather Messenger Bags

The leather messenger bag line launched in 2007 with the Premium Leather Collection. All three leather messenger bags are the same bag. The Premium Leather Shoulder Bag is handcrafted from ethically sourced, vegetable-dyed full-grain or top-grain leather with contrasting white stitching, a silent magnetic closure, a fold-up floor panel, and a 7-pocket front panel organizer. The difference between the three models is the inclusion of a custom-sized MacBook or iPad specific sleeve.

The Fold-Up Floor Panel

The leather messenger bag includes a fold-up floor panel. This is a structural element that collapses the bag's interior depth when the full width of the main compartment is not needed. When the floor panel is folded up, the bag collapses to slim and compact. When it is folded down, the full interior volume opens for overnight use or full carry days. This is another feature that sets MacCase Messenger Bags apart. The leather shoulder bag bundled with a custom-fitted MacBook sleeve at a considerable savings over purchasing separately. Sleeve sizes: 13", 14", 15", and 16". Each sleeve is precision-designed for its specific MacBook footprint, not a generic "fits up to" sizing. The MacBook sleeve features a proven side-loading design, a color-matched zipper-less closure that will not scratch the laptop's finish, a specially designed window that allows the Apple logo to become part of the design, and a color-matched rear cooling vent that allows the processor to cool naturally. We asked MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro about the design philosophy behind the MacCase messenger bag line.

"Growing up in New York City at the birth of the messenger bag, I had friends who were bike messengers who spent their days bombing down Broadway or up 6th Avenue, cutting between the cabs going full gas to make a delivery. I remember hanging out with them after work, seeing their bags emptied of all the packages they had started the day with. The one thing that stuck with my was the simplicity or the bag designs. Not allot of frills, not even any padding. When I sat down in 2003 to design the first messenger bag for MacCase, that simple and functional aesthetic stayed with me. Our messengers have only added a feature or detail when it was going to improve the experience for the majority of our customers. I see bags out there calling themselves messenger bags and they are more briefcases than anything else. I started with a very clear set of design principals for our messengers, large main compartment, soft-sided to allow the shape the change depending on what's inside and wide comfortable strap. We've added amenities over the years: padded air-mesh rear panels, a fully padded and lined interior, BRIGHTSIGHT, organizational storage areas, but for the most part, our messenger bags remain true to the design and functional aesthetic of the bag's origins."
