MacCase has been making tech backpacks since 1998. This collection includes six rPET nylon models and two leather models each engineered around a specific user problem. The nylon models are handcrafted from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) made from post-consumer plastic water bottles, trimmed at every touch point with Black Vintage full-grain premium leather. The leather models convert from shoulder bags to backpacks with an optional strap set. Every MacCase backpack is rated using our Protection Rating System. All nylon models carry a 10-Year Limited Warranty. All leather models carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

The Horizontal Carry Innovation: 13", 14", and iPad Models

Most laptop backpacks carry the laptop vertically. The long axis of the laptop aligned with the long axis of the pack. This is the default orientation because most packs are not wide enough to carry a laptop any other way. MacCase rethought this for smaller laptops and tablets.

The MacCase backpack's round organic shape provides enough interior width to carry 13-inch and 14-inch laptops and iPad models horizontally. The long axis of the device running across the width of the pack rather than top to bottom. A horizontally carried laptop sits lower in the pack. The center of gravity drops. The pack sits closer to the body's natural load-bearing axis. The result is a backpack that feels more balanced and more comfortable day in and day out than a pack of identical weight carried with the laptop vertical. This is not a styling decision. It is an engineering and bio-mechanical decision that required a specific pack shape to execute.

The 15-inch and 16-inch models carry the laptop vertically, the standard orientation, because the horizontal footprint of a 15" or 16" laptop exceeds the pack's interior width.

Horizontal Carry vs. Sleeve-in-Sleeve: Understanding the Trade-Off

The 13", 14", and iPad models offer an optional custom-fitted sleeve that drops into the built-in laptop compartment. This is the same "sleeve-in-sleeve" design used in the MacCase messenger bag line. The sleeve adds a second layer of device-specific protection with a perimeter bumper that absorbs impacts at the most vulnerable edges. However, the optional sleeve is vertically oriented. Adding it means the laptop or tablet is no longer carried horizontally. The trade-off is real: horizontal carry for balance and comfort, or sleeve-in-sleeve for maximum device protection. What will work best for you depends on your needs. 

There is a second reason to consider the optional sleeve even if you primarily use the backpack: the sleeve functions completely independently of the pack. It can be removed and placed inside a roller bag, a briefcase, a tote bag, or any hand carried. If you travel with a roller bag and need a dedicated laptop sleeve for the overhead bin or a client meeting, adding the sleeve to your backpack order at 25% off its standalone price is a significant value. The sleeve you use in the backpack is the same sleeve you use everywhere else.

MacCase Backpack Design Features

BrightSight Interior

Every MacCase nylon backpack features the BrightSight interior, the same high-visibility, light-reflective lining used in the MacCase messenger bag line. Most backpack interiors are dark which makes finding anything at the bottom of the pack in low-light conditions difficult without removing items one at a time. The BrightSight lining reflects ambient light back into the pack's interior. In a parking garage, a darkened hallway, or a dimly lit conference room, the contents of the pack are immediately visible. MacCase introduced BrightSight in the early 2000s. It is a standard feature on every nylon backpack in the lineup.

Tilt-Away Main Compartment

The main compartment of every MacCase nylon backpack is designed to tilt away from the body when the pack is set down and opened. This keeps the zipper teeth from contacting the laptop's surface during ingress and egress. On a standard backpack, opening the main compartment to remove your laptop brings the zipper teeth into direct contact as you pull it out or are putting it away. On the MacCase design, the compartment tilts away, eliminating that contact point. It is a small detail with a significant impact on the long-term condition of the laptop's finish. MacCase introduced the tilt-away design on the original iBook backpack case in 1998 specifically to prevent the zipper teeth from damaging the colorful iBook housing. It has been a standard feature on every MacCase backpack since.

Shawl-Style Ergonomic Shoulder Straps

The MacCase backpack uses a shawl-style shoulder strap design: a curved, anatomically shaped strap that follows the contour of the shoulder rather than running straight across it. Shawl straps are more expensive to manufacture than straight straps because they require additional patterning, cutting, and assembly. The result is a strap that distributes load more evenly across the shoulder and reduces pressure points during extended carry. The straps are sewn to a fully structured rear panel, not directly to the pack fabric, which absorbs and distributes the tension exerted by the straps and prevents premature wear of the pack's materials.

Padded Floor

The floor of every MacCase nylon backpack is padded. When a loaded backpack is set down on a hard surface, a concrete floor, a desk, an airport tile, the impact travels directly to whatever is at the bottom of the pack. The padded floor absorbs that impact before it reaches the laptop or tablet. Most backpacks pad the laptop sleeve and leave the floor unpadded. MacCase pads both. Moreover, MacCase uses a heavy-duty textured material for the exterior bottom panel to prevent premature wearing of this high abrasion surface. 

Round Organic Shape

The MacCase backpack's round organic profile serves two purposes. First, it provides the interior width necessary for horizontal carry of 13" and 14" laptops and tablets. Second, it does not telegraph what is inside. A rectangular backpack with a padded laptop compartment is immediately identifiable as a laptop bag. The MacCase round profile reads as a general-use pack. In environments where advertising the presence of expensive hardware is undesirable, the shape is a deliberate security feature. Reflective inserts are integrated into the pack for visibility at night without compromising the daytime profile.

Full-Grain Leather Touch Points

The handle and zipper pulls on every MacCase nylon backpack are Black Vintage full-grain premium leather, the same ethically sourced leather used in the MacCase leather bag line. These are the points of highest wear contact on any backpack. Full-grain leather outlasts nylon and synthetic materials at those points by years. The leather touch points are not decorative. They are the most durable material available at the locations that experience the most stress.

Leather MacBook Case (Flight Jacket): Vertical Leather Shoulder Case with Backpack Option

The MacCase Premium Leather MacBook Case also known as the Flight Jacket, is a vertically oriented, precision-fitted leather shoulder case available in four sizes: 13", 14", 15", and 16". It is not a traditional backpack. In shoulder mode it carries the MacBook vertically at the side. We asked MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro about the design philosophy behind the MacCase tech backpacks line.

"One of the first line extensions we did after the original MacCase iBook briefcase was a backpack. It had all the color and flair of the original case but in a vertical design. This was the first backpack I had ever designed and looking at what existed at the time, I could not understand why other tech backpack makers were forcing people to drag their expensive laptops over the zipper teeth each time the took the laptop out or put it away. Probably because they were just copying camping and hiking pack and putting a laptop sleeve inside. Our "Tilt-Away" design was a result of wanting to find a better solution. Almost 30 years later and it's still a better way to design a tech backpack. This was the first of many MacCase design innovations that include the world's first modular laptop backpack and the world's first vertical leather briefcase that converts to a backpack. The current line-up of MacCase packs is the result of 3 decades of rebelling against the status quo in pursuit of better solutions for our customers."
