The Briefcase Backpack offers maximum versatility for multi-device professionals. The Tablet Briefcase is ideal for client-facing tablet work. The Tablet Bag is the most compact crossbody option. Nearly three decades of designing for Apple users has taught us that good protection disappears into the experience until the moment it's needed.

The Briefcase Reimagined. The Craft of Making Unchanged.

MacCase has been making briefcases since the company was founded on the creation of the world's first Apple-specific case in 1998 and leather briefcases since launching the Premium Leather Collection in 2007. For nearly 30 years we have applied the same standard to every briefcase we make: ethically sourced full-grain and top-grain leather, handcrafted one at a time, warranted for life. This collection includes three models in two orientations: Vertical and horizontal. Each solving a different professional problem. All models utilize our 4-step seam assembly process. Every MacCase briefcase is rated using our Protection Rating System.

Every model carries laptops and tablets from any manufacturer. Apple, Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft, Samsung, ASUS, HP, if it fits the dimensions, it's compatible. Anchor links in each product section jump directly to the full compatibility list at the bottom of this page.

Two Orientations. Three Briefcases.

Vertical vs. Horizontal: Why Orientation Matters

The traditional briefcase is horizontal. A design inherited from horse satchels of the 1800's and the document cases of the mid-20th century, optimized for paper files, not laptops. MacCase introduced the world's first vertical briefcase in 2014 with the Briefcase Backpack. A vertically-oriented briefcase aligns the long axis of the case with the long axis of the body. The inertia of the weight travels straight down rather than swinging laterally with every step. The result is a briefcase that is more comfortable to carry over a full day than its horizontal predecessors, not because it is lighter, but because the weight is correctly aligned with how the body naturally moves. The horizontal iPad Pro Briefcase in this collection serves a different purpose: it utilizes our Zero-Bulk Architecture so it's a compact, presentation-ready case for tablet users who need a traditional briefcase profile in client-facing environments.

The MacCase Leather Briefcase Collection

Premium Leather Briefcase Backpack: The Vertical Convertible

Also known as the Flight Case, this is the largest and most fully featured briefcase MacCase makes. Fully structured full-grain or top-grain leather, vertically oriented, with a removable padded interior divider that separates two pieces of hardware simultaneously: laptop and tablet, two laptops, or any combination up to the case's capacity. Converts from briefcase to backpack in seconds with the optional backpack strap set. In briefcase mode it reads as a structured professional leather case in any boardroom. In backpack mode it distributes the load across both shoulders for a comfortable long commute. Includes an integrated Air Tag pocket, under-flap organizer with pen and card slots, removable front accessory storage pouch, and front flap zippered pocket. Protection Rating 8.5/10. Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Premium Leather Tablet Briefcase: The Compact Horizontal

A sleek, soft-sided full-grain or top-grain leather briefcase in the classic horizontal orientation. Designed utilizing our Zero-Bulk Architecture around the footprint of a 13-inch tablet with keyboard cover, compact enough for client meetings and office environments where a full laptop briefcase would be oversized. Carry it by the top handle or wear it as a shoulder bag with the included adjustable strap. Features a dedicated padded main compartment, integrated Apple Pencil or stylus pocket, dual storage pockets for charger and cables, front and rear flat pockets, front flap zippered pocket, 3-slot credit card pockets, twin pen pockets, and an integrated Air Tag pocket. Perimeter bumper piping protects against impacts at the most vulnerable edges. Protection Rating 7.5/10. Limited Lifetime Warranty. Professional creative Gar Moss shares his experience:

"Best iPad Pro Briefcase on the planet! Nothing out there compares. The MacCase black leather iPad Pro Briefcase is awesome! The leather is tops, interior compartments are perfect for everything I use as a Creative in the field. The size is perfect to hold my 13 iPad Pro, the exterior looks great, the latch is secure and works well. It even has a small pocket for an Apple Air Tag. Working with customer service to get this delivery was easy and pain free."

Premium Leather Tablet Bag: The Vertical Crossbody

The most compact and lightweight MacCase briefcase also utilizing our Zero-Bulk Architecture. Vertically oriented, soft-sided full-grain or top-grain leather, designed around the footprint of an 13-inch tablet. Carry it as a shoulder or crossbody bag. Carries a tablet, keyboard cover, stylus, charging cable, and other accessories without the bulk of a full briefcase. Features a dedicated padded interior, integrated stylus/pencil pocket, strap-mounted accessory pouch for charging cable and screen cleaners, rear flat pocket, top handle, and removable shoulder strap with polished chrome hardware. The choice for tablet users who want a cross-body bag to store and transport their tablet across town or across the world. Protection Rating 7.6/10. Limited Lifetime Warranty. Customer Bruce F. wrote to tell us:

"The Quality is fantastic! I have to compliment you on your bags. My current iPad bag (black leather) is two years old, used every day, and looks like it is new. The quality is fantastic. Keep up the great work."

Full-Grain Leather: Why It Matters for a Briefcase

Full-Grain vs. Genuine Leather vs. Top-Grain

Most leather briefcases sold at retail, including many at premium price points, are made from genuine leather or bonded leather. Genuine leather is the lowest grade of real leather, made from the fibrous inner layers of the hide after the top layers have been removed for higher-grade products. It is weaker, less durable, and does not develop a patina. Bonded leather is leather scraps and fibers bonded with polyurethane. It peels and cracks within a few months to a year of daily use.

Full-grain leather is the outermost layer of the hide. The densest, most durable part. It retains the natural grain of the hide and develops a patina with daily use: the color deepens, the texture softens, and surface marks that would ruin a synthetic material become part of the character of the piece. MacCase Vintage Brown briefcases are made from authentic, unfinished full-grain leather sourced from ex-Hindu dairy cows in the Highlands of India, where cows are sacred and live out their natural lives before the hides become available. Top-grain leather used in the MacCase Black briefcases, is the second-highest grade, sanded to a uniform finish and more resistant to staining while retaining significant durability. The black has a satin, classic pebble-grain finish. Both grades carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Neither wears out. They wear in.

"I just got my Mac case and I love it. I’ve been searching for a solution something that would carry my iPad with the Magic Keyboard and my other minimal documents that I need etc. for meetings and this is perfect and it’s beautifully done. Thank you!"

Expert Insight: Michael Santoro on Briefcase Design

Michael Santoro MacCase founder, President and Chief Creative Officer, multi-award-winning automotive and product designer and holder of 8 U.S. patents has been creating protective cases for Apple products since he created the market in 1998. Here's his perspective on the design philosophy behind the MacCase briefcases:

"The traditional briefcase hasn't changed meaningfully in a century. It's a horizontal box with a handle. That design made sense when a mail carrier strapped that case to the side of their horse or a professional walked from their horseless carriage into their office carrying papers. It makes less sense when you're carrying a laptop, a tablet, a charger, and everything else the modern professional needs. I wanted to address the traditional form factor and bring it into the 21st century. I wanted to make the shape empathic to how humans move and to offer multiple carry options in the same case."

"A vertical orientation was the answer. First in our Flight Jacket and then in our Briefcase Backpack. Vertical orientation, structured body, converts to a backpack. This is a briefcase designed around how professionals actually move through their day in 2026, not 1856 or 1956! The compact tablet briefcase came from a different observation: tablet users were carrying their devices in laptop bags. These bags are sized for hardware they didn't own. We sized a briefcase around the tablet's actual footprint. Same leather, same craftsmanship, scaled, designed and execute for the task. That's the MacCase approach to every product we make."

FAQs

What warranty do MacCase leather briefcases carry?

All MacCase leather briefcases carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty on workmanship defects during normal use. No MacCase warranty covers normal wear, which on full-grain leather means the development of a patina. This is a feature, not a defect. Warranty terms apply to the original purchaser. MacCase has been making briefcases since 1998 and leather cases since 2007. In that time the warranty has never been a marketing line. It is a reflection of the build quality standard every briefcase leaves the workshop with.

What makes full-grain leather better than genuine leather for a briefcase?

Full-grain leather is the outermost, densest layer of the hide. It is stronger, more durable, and more resistant to moisture than genuine leather, which is made from the weaker inner layers after the top grades have been removed. Full-grain leather develops a patina with daily use. Genuine leather and bonded leather do not develop a patina; they crack and peel. A full-grain leather briefcase is a long-term investment. A genuine leather briefcase is a short-term purchase. MacCase briefcases are made exclusively from full-grain and top-grain leather. Never genuine, never bonded, never vegan leather.

What is the best leather briefcase that converts to a backpack?

The MacCase Premium Leather Briefcase Backpack is the only fully structured full-grain leather briefcase in the MacCase lineup that converts to a backpack. In briefcase mode it carries by handle or adjustable shoulder strap. With the optional backpack strap set, it converts to a backpack that distributes the load across both shoulders. If needed, the main compartment carries two pieces of hardware simultaneously, laptop and tablet, or two laptops, separated by a removable padded divider panel. Compatible with all laptops up to 16.2-inch and all tablets. Protection Rating 8.5/10. Limited Lifetime Warranty. In continuous production since 2014. See the full compatibility list below.

What is the difference between a vertical and horizontal briefcase?

A horizontal briefcase orients the long axis of the case perpendicular to the body, the traditional design inherited from document cases of the mid-20th century. It carries by handle or shoulder strap with the case hanging at the side. A vertical briefcase orients the long axis of the case parallel to the body's vertical axis. The weight travels straight down rather than swinging laterally with every step, reducing shoulder fatigue over a full day of carry. MacCase introduced the vertical leather briefcase in 2014 with the Briefcase Backpack. The horizontal iPad Pro Briefcase in this collection serves client-facing environments where the traditional briefcase profile is preferred. Both orientations are available in the same ethically sourced full-grain and top-grain leather with the same Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Which MacCase briefcase is best for frequent travelers or airport use?

The Briefcase Backpack. In briefcase mode it carries through security and fits in the overhead bin. With the optional backpack strap set it converts to a backpack for hands-free transit between gates. The large main compartment handles a laptop, tablet, charger, cables, cards, pens, etc. without a second bag. The Tablet Briefcase and Tablet Bag both qualify as airline personal items and fit under the seat in front of you, the right choice for tablet-only travelers who want to avoid overhead bin competition entirely. All three are handcrafted from full-grain leather and carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Do MacCase briefcases work with the Magic Keyboard on iPad Pro?

Yes. The Tablet Briefcase and Tablet Bag are both sized to carry the 13-inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard attached. The dedicated padded compartment accommodates the combined thickness of the iPad and keyboard without removing the keyboard before storing. The Briefcase Backpack carries the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard in the main compartment alongside a laptop, separated by the removable padded divider panel. All three are compatible with 13-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro M4 and M5 and iPad Air M2, M3, and M4.

Are MacCase leather briefcases comfortable for all-day carry?

Yes, and the carry mode determines the comfort level. The Tablet Bag is the lightest and most compact, worn as a crossbody bag. It distributes weight across the body and moves naturally with your stride. The Tablet Briefcase is compact enough that shoulder fatigue is not a factor for most users. The Briefcase Backpack is the heaviest when fully loaded, convert it to backpack mode for long commutes or airport transit and the load distributes across both shoulders.

Can I customize MacCase leather briefcases?

Yes. All three briefcases are available through the MacCase Custom Program. The standard lineup offers Vintage Brown full-grain leather and Pebble Grain Black top-grain leather. The Custom Program expands the selection to over 10 leather colors including Red, Pink, Blue Violet, and Vintage Gray, plus monogramming, custom stitching colors, and corporate branding. Every custom order is handcrafted to the same standard as the standard lineup and carries the same Limited Lifetime Warranty. Contact MacCase directly for corporate and bulk orders.
