Why Interior Pockets Are a Bad Idea

The obvious solution: Put some interior pockets on the inside of the front cover. This was rejected for two specific reasons. First, papers, cards, or any object placed in an interior cover pocket blocks the magnets that power the smart cover's automatic sleep/wake function. The feature that wakes the iPad when you open the cover and sleeps it when you close it stops working the moment something is placed between the cover and the screen. A core feature of the case is negated by the storage it was designed to provide.

Second, and more critically, an interior pocket is a liability by design. A user places a hard object, a stylus, a card holder, a charging cable, in the interior pocket. The cover closes over it. The folio goes into a briefcase or bag. Pressure is applied to the outside of the bag. That pressure transfers to the folio, then to the hard object, then directly to the iPad's screen. The screen cracks. The interior pocket design invited the failure.

MacCase refused this solution.

The Magnetic Accessory Solution

The MAS keeps every accessory external. Three small circular magnets on the front cover of the MAS-equipped folio allow four optional accessories to attach and detach on the outside of the case, never between the cover and the screen, never blocking the sleep/wake magnets, never creating a pressure point against the display.

The magnetic attachment is strong enough to hold the accessories securely through normal daily carry. If sufficient external force or pressure is applied, the folio is compressed in a bag, dropped, or sat upon, the magnets release. The accessories detach before the force reaches the iPad.
