Will My iPad Bend in My Backpack?
While iPads are generally well-built devices, they are not indestructible, and certain situations can potentially lead to bending, especially when carried in a backpack.
There is no guarantee it will bend if carried in a backpack, but there is a risk, depending on several factors. These include the type of pack you are using and which Apple tablet model you are carrying.
Here are some scenarios where your Apple tablet may be at risk of bending in your backpack:
1. External Pressure
Placing heavy items on top of your backpack or leaning on or sitting with your backpack in a certain way can exert pressure on the iPad, potentially causing it to bend, especially if the backpack lacks adequate padding or protection.
2. Tight Spaces
If your backpack is tightly packed with other items, especially rigid objects like books or binders, there may be limited space for the iPad. In such cases, the pressure from surrounding items can press against the iPad, leading to bending over time.
3. Impact or Dropping
Accidentally dropping your backpack or subjecting it to sudden impacts, such as bumping into objects or being jostled in crowded spaces, can also cause the iPad to bend if it is not adequately protected within the backpack.
4. Extreme Temperatures
Extreme temperatures, particularly heat, can soften the materials of the iPad, making it more susceptible to bending under pressure. Leaving your backpack with the iPad inside in a hot car or exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period can pose a risk.
Will the iPad Pro Bend in My Backpack?
Several factors can increase or reduce the risk of bending. These include the size and model of your iPad Pro, whether it's in a rigid case or protective sleeve, the type of backpack you are using and what else you are carrying.
The iPad Pro, particularly the 12.9-inch model, can indeed be susceptible to bending when carried in a pack, and extra care should be taken to prevent this from happening.
Unlike smaller iPads or other tablets, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro has a larger surface area and a thinner aluminum rear panel structure, making it more prone to bending under pressure. Additionally, the large sheet of glass that makes up the screen can also contribute to its vulnerability.
Several scenarios can lead to the bending of an iPad Pro, especially the 12.9-inch model, while it is inside a backpack:
1. External Forces
Cramming heavy items next to or on top of what you are using for an iPad Pro backpack (as in an overhead bin on an airplane) can exert pressure on your Apple tablet, particularly on the thin aluminum rear panel. Over time, this pressure can cause the iPad Pro to bend or warp.
2. Internal Pressure:
If what you are using for an iPad Pro backpack is tightly packed with other items, especially rigid objects, there may be limited space for your tablet. The pressure from surrounding items can press against the tablet body, leading to bending or deformation. This can be exacerbated by sitting or leaning with the pack on against a hard exterior surface.
Unintentional dropping of what you are using for an iPad Pro backpack or experiencing sharp collisions, such as hitting objects or being pushed in crowded areas, can also result in the bending of the iPad Pro if it is not sufficiently safeguarded inside the backpack.
4. High Temperatures:
Extreme temperatures, specifically heat, can cause the materials of your tablet to become softer and more vulnerable to bending when pressure is applied. Therefore, it is important to avoid leaving the iPad Pro inside the backpack in a hot car or directly exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period to prevent any potential damage.
How Do I Stop My iPad From Bending in My Backpack?
Ensuring your iPad stays safe and secure while in your backpack is crucial to prevent bending or damage. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by using a dedicated iPad backpack designed specifically to protect your device during travel and daily use.
We looked at different scenarios that may cause your Apple tablet to bend when carried in a backpack. Now let's take a closer look at how to stop and prevent this. When selecting an iPad backpack, look for features that prioritize the safety and security of your iPad, such as:
1. Structured Rear Panel
This may be the single most important way to prevent bending your Apple tablet when in your backpack.
Opting for a pack with a structured rear panel offers stability and support to prevent bending. The structured panel will help distribute the weight evenly across your back, minimizing pressure on your iPad and reducing the risk of bending, especially during extended periods of wear.
Moreover, it provides much-needed support to the overall structure of the pack absorbing impacts, stresses, pressure and vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted to and through your Apple tablet.
2. Built-in iPad Sleeve
Choose an iPad backpack that includes a dedicated padded compartment or sleeve designed to fit your Apple tablet. This sleeve should provide a comfortable and secure fit for your device, preventing it from shifting or moving around inside the backpack.
3. Optional iPad Sleeve
For added protection, consider using an additional iPad sleeve that can be inserted into the built-in padded sleeve of the iPad backpack. This extra layer of padding will provide enhanced cushioning and shock absorption, reducing the risk of bending or damage to your iPad.
4. Padded Interior
At the minimum, look for a backpack with a padded interior lining to provide extra cushioning and protection for your Apple tablet. The padding will help absorb external impacts and prevent damage from bumps or knocks while on the move. Moreover, the padded walls and bottom panel will "give" more to help absorb the internal stress or pressure that would otherwise be placed upon your tablet.
5. Handle with Care
Avoid over-packing your backpack and ensure there is sufficient space and padding around the iPad Pro to prevent pressure from surrounding items. Be mindful of how you handle and carry the backpack to avoid subjecting it to sudden impacts. Store the backpack at a safe and moderate temperature to prevent exposure to extreme heat or cold, which can soften the iPad Pro's materials and increase the risk of bending.
By investing in a dedicated iPad backpack with these features, along with using an optional iPad sleeve for added protection, you can effectively prevent your iPad from bending or sustaining damage while in your backpack. Remember to choose a backpack that prioritizes quality, durability, and functionality to ensure your iPad stays safe and secure wherever you go.
Is It Safe To Put My iPad in My Backpack?
Carrying your iPad in a backpack can be safe if you take the necessary precautions to protect it from damage. However, the level of safety largely depends on the type of backpack you use.
Let's compare a standard, general-use, non-padded backpack with a dedicated iPad backpack like the MacCase iPad Backpack to understand how and why choosing the latter is the best way to guarantee the safety of your iPad.
Standard Non-Padded Backpack
A standard non-padded backpack may lack the necessary features to adequately protect your iPad. Here are some potential risks associated with using this type of backpack:
• Lack of a Structural Panel
General-use packs typically don't give a thought to providing integrated structure to the body of the pack. Without an integrated, structural rear panel, all of the tension is borne by the fabrics. This can lead to premature wear. Moreover, a pack without an integrated structural panel providing support transfers 100% of the stress to your Apple tablet.
• Lack of Dedicated Compartment
These backpacks typically don't have a designated compartment or sleeve specifically designed to fit and secure your iPad, increasing the risk of damage from shifting or moving around inside the bag.
• Limited Padding
Non-padded backpacks often lack sufficient padding to cushion your iPad against impacts or vibrations during travel.

• Dedicated iPad Compartment
The MacCase iPad Backpack features a dedicated padded compartment or sleeve designed to securely hold your iPad in place, preventing it from shifting or moving during travel. This compartment provides a snug fit and ample cushioning to protect your iPad from impacts or bumps.
• Optional Custom-Fit 12.9 Sleeve

The latest in a series of interviews about the story behind the design of MacCase products. For this interview, we are speaking to MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro about the company's rucksack for iPad.
Jody: What makes this new model a good rucksack for iPad?
MS: A good rucksack for iPad offers unparalleled versatility, comfort and value. It will do everything the owner needs it to do while protecting their Apple tablet.
Our goal was to design a simple, lightweight, protective rucksack for iPad that answered the needs of someone who needs a pack to go the the coffee shop, to school, commuting to work or even for day use during extensive travel. While trying to have one product answer all of those needs may seem like a big ask, when you distill it down, the needs are all very similar.
A Small Backpack For iPad
JKD - This is a small backpack for iPad compared to a lot of the competition. What do you want potential customers to know about this new model?
MS - It might appear to be a small but first and foremost, the product protects. It's an unspoken promise we make with every sale. We've done the absolute best we can to ensure that under the majority of conditions and situations you may find yourself in, this small backpack for iPad will protect your investment.
We built it out of our wonderful new rPET nylon. Despite its durability, rPET nylon is surprisingly lightweight. This makes it an ideal choice for those who are always on the go. A backpack made from rPET nylon won't weigh you down, allowing you to comfortably carry your essentials without feeling burdened.
On the inside, we created BRIGHTSIGHT 2.0, the next generation of our interior design that allows ambient light to reflect down inside the pack so you can really see what you are looking for. Many customers have told us that BRIGHTSIGHT removes all the stress of searching for things like keys or their phone at night or in a dark parking garage.
Putting Your iPad in the Backpack
JDK - You offer the pack with an optional 12.9 Sleeve. Tell us about that.
MS - We have the sleeve in our system so adding it as an option is easy. Many people want it and it provides the next level of protection. Moreover, you can use them separately or together. If you have a rolling bag that you want to use and you want to put your 12.9 in it, you have the optional sleeve that you can then use to protect your Apple tablet in the roller bag.
If you want to use the backpack to take to the gym, you leave the sleeve and the computer at home and throw your gym stuff in the backpack and you're off to the gym. Having the sleeve gives you lots of options.
Steve Jobs took chances on products all the time. If you want to lead, it's what you have to do. My job is to make sure that we deliver on the promise of providing innovative, beautiful, functional protection for our customers, executed at the highest level of quality and value. I think the new iPad backpack just does that.
