I ordered this pack. Got here quickly and was nicer that I imagined.
Holds the iPad in the sleeve and there’s room for lots more stuff.
The real leather handle is a nice touch.
Very comfortable.
Everything is nicely padded and the whole rear part of the pack is quite sturdy. I hope
to have this pack for a good long time.

Will My iPad Bend in My Backpack?

Yes, if the wrong backpack is used. The 13-inch iPad Pro M4 and M5 and 13-inch iPad Air have the largest surface area and thinnest aluminum chassis Apple has ever produced. An unstructured bag without proper padding flexes and distorts under load and transfers that force directly to whatever is inside. For a rigid laptop, that flex can be absorbed by the chassis. For a large, thin iPad, it accumulates as permanent deformation. Four specific conditions cause it:

External pressure

A leading cause of damaged iPad Pros is backpack flex, a soft, unstructured bag that bends under load and transfers that force directly to the tablet inside. Heavy items stacked on top of or against the pack compress the iPad's panel surface. In an overhead bin, under a seat, or in a crowded subway car, this pressure is constant and invisible until it isn't. Sitting with the backpack on and the iPad inside against a hard surface is also one of the leading causes of iPad bending. The pack follows the curve of your spine while the iPad is pressed between your spine and the hard seating surface.

Tight packing

Rigid objects like books, binders, an aluminum water bottle, other electronic devices or hard-sided accessories pressed against the iPad create localized stress points as the unstructured pack constantly changes shape. The iPad bends at the point of contact, not evenly across the surface.

Door Frames, Turnstiles, and Side Strikes

Most backpacks, including ones marketed as tablet backpacks, pad only the tablet sleeve. The side panels, front panel, and floor are bare fabric. This is a cost decision, not a design one. The result: any lateral impact such as striking a door frame while boarding a bus, catching a turnstile, being bumped in a crowded subway car, transmits shock directly through the unpadded fabric wall into the bag contents and then into the tablet. The iPad doesn't need to be dropped to be damaged. It needs only to be inside an unpadded bag when that bag hits something hard enough.

Hard Surface Set Down / Dropping

Setting a backpack down on concrete, tile, or an airport floor is one of the most common and least considered impact events in daily carry. Most backpacks have no floor padding, just a layer of fabric between the bottom of your iPad and the surface. A dropped pack, or one repeatedly placed on hard floors, transmits the full shock of that impact upward through the thin fabric directly into your expensive Apple tablet. For a large, thin iPad Pro, that accumulated shock is a bending, dent and cracking risk that builds invisibly over time.

Why MacCase Makes the Best Backpack for iPad

The MacCase engineers a specific response to each condition that can possibly cause your iPad to bend. These ideas take shape in our Pad Backpack where all four problems are addressed through design. MacCase has been engineering around carry issues like these since 2000. The structured rear panel, dedicated, padded iPad compartment, padded side and front exterior panels and padded floor exist because we understood these problems before most of our competitors existed.

Fully-Structured Rear Panel

The fully structured rear panel is the primary defense against iPad bending and the feature standard backpacks, even ones with a padded tablet compartment, ignore entirely. Without an integrated structural panel, all tension is borne by the fabrics, transferring 100% of external stress directly to your tablet. The MacCase rear panel construction, air mesh padding, 10mm foam padding, the structural panel, 10mm foam padding internal, then the padded iPad compartment, absorbs external pressure and distributes it across the pack structure rather than through the iPad. Padded side and front panels work with this fully structured rear panel to create a 360-degree protection system. This is why the MacCase iPad Backpack does not flex under load even while sitting against a hard surface, the leading cause of iPad bending that no standard backpack addresses.

Dedicated iPad Compartment

Our dedicated padded iPad compartment isolates the tablet from books, cables, and other bag contents. The iPad cannot contact rigid objects regardless of how the pack is loaded. The compartment is sized to fit the 13-inch iPad Pro with any Apple keyboard attached, Smart Keyboard, Magic Keyboard, keyboard cover, so you don't have to remove your keyboard to pack your iPad. Even if direct pressure is applied from the inside, the padded compartment including the floor, absorbs the stress before it reaches the tablet.

Padded Exterior Panels

The MacCase iPad Backpack pads and lines every front-facing exterior panel meaning side panels (5mm foam padding) and front panels (5mm foam padding). Our backpacks are not a tablet sleeve with a bag sewn to it. We look at backpack design holistically with each part and each layer serving the purpose of protection. Every impact with a door frame, turnstile, or hard surface is absorbed by the padding before that energy reaches the bag contents. When the energy from an impact contacts any surface of the pack, that energy immediately begins to be absorbed. The iPad is not the last line of defense. The bag is.

Padded Floor

The MacCase iPad Backpack features a padded floor that absorbs drop shock before it reaches the iPad compartment. Most tablet backpack manufactures don't bother to pad the floor because it's an easy way to cut costs. Someone who didn't know to look for this feature may only find out the first time they set their pack down on the sidewalk to wait for a bus. At MacCase, we've been around for nearly three decades because we engineer and design solutions like a padded floor in, instead of looking to save costs by leaving them out.

MacCase Sleeve-in-Sleeve iPad Protection System

Our iPad Backpack features the MacCase Sleeve-in-Sleeve iPad Protection System, which pairs an optional vertical 13" sleeve with the bag’s integrated tablet compartment. By combining these, we provide one of the most secure carrying environments for your Apple tablet on the market, regardless of budget. We designed this as an optional upgrade because we believe in giving you the choice; you can use the pieces together for maximum security, separately for convenience, or opt out of the sleeve entirely to keep your purchase as streamlined as you prefer. It’s another level of protection that you can customize based on your specific needs.

Eco-Friendly, Water-Resistant Material

The MacCase iPad Backpack is constructed from rPET nylon (which is made from recycled from post-consumer plastic bottles) with a water resistance rating of 9/10. It handles moisture, rain, and accidental spills without compromising the iPad inside. The rPET nylon fabric is inherently waterproof; the finished bag is rated 9/10 rather than 10/10 because the sewing process introduces seam points mitigated by gluing, seam taping, and double-stitching. Choosing rPET supports the recycling industry and reduces demand for new plastic production without sacrificing the durability of a premium nylon.

Security Through Design

The MacCase iPad backpack is intentionally compact, sized for your iPad Pro setup, not a week of luggage. More importantly, the round, organic shape disguises the fact that you are carrying an expensive iPad Pro or Air. This is design as a security feature, not an aesthetic choice. In addition to the added security of not looking like an iPad backpack, the design features reflective inserts on each side to help you be seen at night.

10-year Limited Warranty

The 10-year limited warranty on the MacCase iPad Backpack is not a marketing claim. It reflects the YKK zippers, rPET nylon construction, leather touch points, and heavy-duty textured bottom panel that go into every unit. Entry-level iPad backpacks are designed to be replaced. This one is designed to last through many iPad upgrades. In production since 2015. MacCase has been shipping worldwide since 1998, 28 years of continuous production.

A Legacy of Ingenuity: 28+ Years of MacCase Backpacks

The MacCase backpack lineage began in late 1999 and into 2000 with the design and release is the first backpack for iBook. This was a natural evolution of the very first iBook briefcase, the bag that created the Apple-specific market a year prior. While the rest of the industry was churning out generic, one-size-fits-all laptop bags, we were already deep into engineering specialized solutions built exclusively for Apple portables. Innovation has always been our baseline. In 2003, we debuted the MacPack, a radical, modular three-compartment system that allowed users to zip sections together or strip them down based on the day’s carry needs. It was a level of adaptability the category had never witnessed. By 2004, we pushed that versatility further by integrating a dedicated, removable sleeve into the backpack architecture.

Continued Design Innovation

In 2014, we made a clean break from the "boxy" aesthetic that had dominated the industry for a decade. The iPad Backpack introduced a curved, organic silhouette designed to move in harmony with the human body. We didn't just change the shape; we obsessed over the details.

The BrightSight interior ended the era of digging through dark bags, while the tilt-away opening ensured an aluminum iPad would never scrape against abrasive zipper teeth, a small refinement that saves a tablet’s finish over years of use.

By 2023, the iPad Backpack was updated to meet modern sustainability standards, utilizing rPET nylon crafted from recycled plastic bottles, finished with the same premium leather touch points that have anchored the brand since 2008. This isn't a bag mocked up last year to follow a fad. It is the culmination of a quarter-century of relentless refinement, each version solving a new set of problems, and every material earning its spot through 28 years of proven performance.

Who the MacCase iPad Backpack Is For?

The MacCase iPad Backpack was designed around one specific use case: carrying a 13-inch iPad Pro, iPad Air, accessories and personal items every day, protected from bending, organized, and without bulk. These are the people who reach for it.

Professionals and Business Travelers

A compact professional backpack for the office, client presentations, and business travel. The organic round shape reads as a personal bag, not a tablet bag. This is important in environments where advertising expensive hardware is a security risk. The compact dimensions fit under airline seats and in regional aircraft overhead bins. The Tilt-Away compartment allows fast iPad access at airport security without removing the pack from the conveyor. The 10-year warranty means one purchase covers every iPad you'll own for the next decade.

Students

At 18 oz., this is one of the lightest dedicated iPad Pro backpacks available. The dedicated padded iPad compartment keeps the tablet isolated from textbooks, notebooks, and water bottles, the exact objects that bend unprotected iPads in generic student packs. The front panel organizer holds pens, a phone, cards, and a charger. The pack can be carried by the handle, worn over both shoulders or carried sling-style over one as students like to do.

Artists and Creatives

The iPad Pro is the primary portable for illustrators, designers, and musicians using Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard. The dedicated iPad compartment fits the iPad Pro with any keyboard attached. There is no removal required. The BrightSight interior makes finding accessories, cables, Apple Pencils, and drawing tools fast in low-light studio and venue environments. The optional 13" sleeve adds a second protective layer for the iPad's finish during transit between locations.

Photographers

The compact main compartment holds a mirrorless camera body with one lens alongside the iPad Pro. The padded floor absorbs hard surface placement. This is critical when setting the pack down on concrete, gravel, or uneven terrain at a shoot location. The 9/10 water resistance rating handles outdoor and weather conditions. The reflective inserts provide visibility during early morning or late evening location shoots.

Pilots and Aviation Professionals

Pilots carrying an iPad Pro as an EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) need a pack that fits in regional aircraft overhead bins and under jump seats where full-size bags do not. The MacCase iPad Backpack's compact dimensions and structured shape prevent shifting during turbulence when stowed. The Tilt-Away compartment allows fast iPad access during pre-flight and post-flight workflows. The fully structured rear panel protects the iPad from the lateral impacts common in aircraft boarding environments such as door frames, galley equipment, overhead bin edges.

Medical and Healthcare Professionals

Healthcare professionals carrying an iPad Pro between departments, clinics, or hospital campuses need a pack that is compact, organized, and durable enough for daily institutional use. The heavy-duty textured bottom panel handles hard floor placement on tile and concrete. The fully padded exterior panels protect the iPad from lateral impacts common in busy clinical environments.

Travelers

At 9/10 water resistance and 18 oz., the MacCase iPad Backpack is built for international travel. The organic round shape disguises the iPad Pro from opportunistic theft in new environments. The BrightSight interior makes locating items fast in the low-light environment of an aircraft floor or overhead bin.

FAQs

What is the MacCase iPad Backpack?

The MacCase iPad Backpack is a compact, lightweight backpack handcrafted from rPET nylon (made from recycled plastic bottles) with premium leather trim, handle, and YKK zipper pulls. Designed for all 13-inch iPad Pro, 13-inch iPad Air, and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with or without Apple keyboard. Overall Protection Rating 8.03/10. Individual Ratings: Impact 8/10, Scratch 7.5/10, Corner 8/10, Water 9/10. Dedicated iPad compartment, BrightSight interior, Tilt-Away main compartment, fully structured rear panel, optional 13" sleeve. 10-year limited warranty.

Will My iPad Pro Bend in the MacCase Backpack?

While we cannot make a definitive guarantee, MacCase has harnessed the nearly 30 years of backpack design experience to prevent your iPad from bending when being transported in our pack. This is the specific problem the MacCase iPad Backpack was designed to solve. iPad bending in backpacks is a documented real-world issue: external pressure from overpacked bags, tight spaces, and impacts can flex a large iPad's chassis over time.

The MacCase iPad Backpack prevents this through four design features working together: a fully structured rear panel that prevents pack flex under load, a dedicated padded iPad compartment that isolates the tablet from other bag contents, an optional 13" sleeve that adds a second rigid protective layer, and a padded floor that absorbs hard surface placement shock. Standard backpacks address none of these. The MacCase addresses all four.

What iPad Models Fit the MacCase iPad Backpack?

The MacCase iPad Backpack fits all large iPad models: 13-inch iPad Pro (all generations including M4/M5), 13-inch iPad Air (M2 and later), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (5th and 6th generation). The dedicated compartment is compatible with all Apple keyboard covers and Smart Keyboard Folio. The optional 13" sleeve fits 13-inch and 12.9-inch models but does not work with the Magic Keyboard. It works with Apple keyboard covers and Smart Keyboard Folio only.

How Is the MacCase iPad Backpack Different From a Standard Laptop Backpack?

The Tilt-Away opening prevents the iPad from contacting zipper teeth during access. The fully structured rear panel prevents pack flex that causes iPad bending, a failure mode that laptop backpacks don't address because laptop chassis are significantly more rigid than iPad glass. The optional 13" sleeve works with Apple keyboard covers and Smart Keyboard Folio, keeping your full iPad setup protected as a single unit.

What Is the Optional 13" Sleeve and Do I Need It?

The optional MacCase 13" Sleeve is a zipperless, top-loading sleeve made from rPET nylon with a soft-touch interior liner and heavy-duty perimeter seam tape. It fits all 13-inch and 12.9-inch iPad models with Apple keyboard covers or Smart Keyboard Folio attached but not the Magic Keyboard. Inside the backpack, it creates a sleeve-in-sleeve system that adds a second rigid protective layer between your iPad and the pack's interior. For iPad Pro owners who carry their tablet daily or travel frequently, the sleeve is the correct addition.

Is the MacCase iPad Backpack Good for Travel?

Yes. At 18 oz. with a water resistance rating of 9/10, it handles everything from daily commutes to international travel. The organic round shape disguises your hardware. The side-mounted water bottle pocket, reflective inserts for night visibility, and padded floor for hard surface placement are all built for sustained daily use. The Tilt-Away compartment means you can access your iPad quickly at airport security without fumbling. The 10-year warranty means one pack covers every iPad you'll own for the next decade.

Is the MacCase iPad Backpack waterproof or water resistant?

This pack offers a 9/10 rating for water resistance, the highest level in our entire lineup. While the rPET nylon material itself is completely waterproof, we cap the rating at 9/10 because sewing creates inevitable seam points. We work to mitigate these through specialized techniques like double-stitching, seam taping, and bonding, ensuring that your MacBook remains safe and dry even during heavy rain, wet commutes, or the occasional spill. Backed by a 10-year limited warranty, this bag is built for cyclists, travelers, and daily commuters who require dependable, all-weather defense for their Apple tech.

Does the MacCase iPad Backpack Come with a Warranty?
