12.9 and 10.5 Leather iPad Pro Case - Behind the Design
The latest in a series of interviews about the story behind the design of MacCase products. For this interview, we are speaking to MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro about the company's iPad Pro Leather Cases specifically the new Folios for the 12.9 and 10.5 Apple tablets.
JKD- Can you give us some insight into the design process. How do the designs come to life?
MS: When it came time to design a folio for Apple's newest tablet we got right to work. Larger means more materials and more structure but it's much easier to build than say, the Mini Folio was. Our goals for these cases was to carry on the tradition of building the world's highest quality portfolios for Apple’s tablets.
JKD: You've been designing and MacCase has been making folio style cases for Apple iPads since day one. How has the introduction of the iPad Pro changed your thinking about Folio design?
MS: Wow, that's a good question. The original Folio I did was very successful. It was a design that brought many new customers to MacCase and most are still with us to this day. Our original leather iPad case really planted a flag at the top of the mountain.
You had all these high end, fashion brands, famous European design houses that came out with cases that were over $500. Some were very nice and some were real pretenders. Many people were paying big dollars for a big brand name slapped on a mediocre case design. Our Folio showed you could have world class quality, world class materials, world class design for a fraction of the price of those fashion brands.
With each successive introduction of a new iPad form factor, we updated and improved our Folio design. As Apple added new features, so did we. For the new iPad Pro leather cases, both the 12.9 and 10.5 Folios, we have added and updated more new features than in any previous version.
We have also had to respond, literally in the last few weeks, to new ways customers are using their Apple tablets. Those changes have been integrated into the new Folios as well.
We're very excited about the new features and how well our tried and true features have translated over to the new designs. MacCase has been making Folios for the iPad since Apple has been making tablets. Like the iPhone for Apple, MacCase's iPad Folio is the product by which many people, find, get introduced, learn about and ultimately become a customer of MacCase.
As people move away from buying on quality towards a world where they are fooled into buying on discount (mark something up, then discount it so the customer thinks they are getting a "deal") MacCase's Premium Leather models stand in stark contrast to this trend.
You can purchase an iPad case on ebay for under $10. The new leather iPad Pro case has an MSRP of $159.95. Yes, the case on ebay is basically landfill biding it's time pretending to offer protection for Apple tablets. This new, hand built case is a product that will probably out live the tablet it's designed to protect.Leaders in the film, music, television, advertising and business communities have come to expect the best from MacCase and we want to deliver on this expectation. With the addition of the Apple Pencil to the mix, we added an exterior Pencil holder pocket to house and protect this valuable accessory. I feel we have an excellent solution to do this.
How to Choose a Quality iPad Pro Leather Case
JKD: So what makes this leather iPad Pro Folio so special?
MS: Before any hides are picked or anything is sewn together, a great deal of time, money and energy is spent on developing the frame. This is the heart of the case. If the frame is not designed, engineered and built perfectly, it doesn't matter how soft the hides are or how well they are sewn together.
The frame is stamped from a single sheet of alloyed steel. It's then folded and welded to a very tight specification to insure it not only holds Apple's largest tablet in place but that you have access to all the ports and controls. This frame has to be strong. If you've ever purchased a snap in plastic case for an iPad, you've learned that after a short time the corners develop cracks and eventually break off offering no protection for the most vulnerable areas. In essence, you've wasted your money.
Having our lightweight, yet amazing strong hand made frame securing your iPad vs. a cheap plastic frame is the difference between using a Rolls Royce to get somewhere vs. a pair of cheap plastic roller skates. Once the frame is created, it is then covered in ultra suede and sewn into the body of the case and checkin one last time for a perfect fit.
Our distressed, Vintage brown leather will patina in over time getting darker where you touch it and lighter as the natural oil evaporates out. As time passes, your Folio will only look like your Folio because of how you use it. This process of individualization endears our distressed, Vintage brown leather iPad Pro case to their owners.
On the interior, we continue to use the extremely functional, black ultra-suede stitched with thread that has been dyed black 3 times to insure it creates the ultimate in a user interface experience. When you open our new portfolio, all you see is screen.
All of these elements of the design add up to the best user experience in the Apple specific case world. Quality through and through was the goal. For our newest Folios, the quality is visible in every stitch.
What's The Best Way To Protect and Transport the Apple Pencil
JKD: What features do the Pro specific models have? Give us the details.
MS: From a design perspective, the iPad Pro opened up several opportunities to incorporate new design elements into the new leather iPad Pro portfolio case. These elements add functionality and distinction. The first of these is a place to store the Apple pencil or similar third party stylists.
Several locations were looked at but it was decided that the upper left hand exterior corner offered the best overall functionality as well as an interesting stylistic opportunity. A very special die was created to mold the leather into a three dimensional form that becomes the pocket for the pencil.
The overall appearance is quite handsome and integrated. It looks very organic. The closure flap for the pencil pocket is secured with a single hidden magnet. Very elegant.
Creating a place, a pocket or other idea, was extremely important to how I approached the new Folio design. It had to have the best Apple Pencil holder solution. This is an area where we can leverage the 20 years we have been doing this to come up with the best idea, the best answer to a very real problem.
I have been told by many customers that we have the single best solution for storing and transporting the Pencil. That was the type of feedback every designer wants to hear.
"Yeah, you know that new feature that you designed into your new case, well, I've looked at what everyone else has done, and yours is the best.” This was heard repeatedly as I answered calls and emails from customers looking for information about our products. It really feels good, especially with all that has happened with this program.
So the integration of the Pencil pocket into the front cover is the feature highlight for me. It looks likes it's always been there and the inclusion adds a nice design detail to the overall aesthetic we have developed. Most importantly, it does the job it was designed to do, which is to provide the best protection for the Pencil.
Call after call, email after email, the praise for our integrated Pencil holder to hold the Apple Pencil is resounding. This type of feedback makes us particularly happy. Sure everyone wants to be praised and lauded. But that is not what is in play here. As a company founded on better design, it fills out hearts when we do what we feel is out best and the world agrees. Every creative person wants that sort of acknowledgment.
We strive to put the best of our ability in each product we do: The best design, the best materials, etc. For the Apple Pencil, this $100 easily lost accessory, our priority was to create a case design where protecting and transporting the Pencil was as integrated as the protecting the transporting the tablet itself.
Our low profile, exterior Pencil holder / pocket does just that. It makes the best folio design in the industry even better by adding this needed functionality. It does it in a way that is honest, sincere, authentic and esthetically pleasing. The reviews speak for themselves.
How to Get The Best Sound From Your iPad Pro
MS: While the exterior pencil pocket is the most visible clue that is Folio is for the Pro, another Pro specific detail that is just as impactful is hidden inside. Many of the cases available for Apple tablets smother or mask the speaker, muffling the music, voice or other sounds emanating from them. MacCase incorporates what is called a "SoundBoard" design by which a material is used to achieve the opposite.
For the Pro, a hard smooth leather is used under and around each of the 4 speakers in the Pros body. When you slide the tablet into the Folio, the sound is not masked but projected. Sound waves love smooth, hard surfaces.
Having the sound waves exciting the speakers and hitting the leather causes the sound to then be projected out and away from both the case and tablet. Lower volumes can be used vs. not having the SoundBoard design, saving battery life.
Because older iPad models have a single speaker, there was always one SoundBoard area in each Folio to project the sound. With the leather iPad Pro Folio, there are 4 to match the 4 speakers contained in the tablet.
The effect is even greater than the single SoundBoard Folio models and has to be heard to be believed. This is a feature I'm not sure many customers are even aware exists. They just think it's the iPad that sounds so good in our case! ( laughing).
The benefit of this is, say you like the volume 6 clicks above mute. You place your Pro in a case from brand "X" and the sound is muffled. So you have to boost the volume level to 8 or 9 clicks to get the same volume you were using without the case.
With our iPad Pro leather cases, you can actually drop the volume level a click or 2 and get the same level of volume that you had without the case. Lower volume level means less energy needed means longer battery life between charges. Yes, it a small thing, but in a premium, luxury and professional level case, it's those things that make a big difference.
Look at cars. Both Rolls Royce and Kia have an engine, 4 wheels, a place to sit, etc. Why is one $30K and another $300K? It's what Rolls Royce does with the engine, wheels, place to sit, etc. that makes it 100 times better.
LIke Rolls Royce, how we handle the details reflects our commitment do doing things better, smarter and more intelligently. Maybe with a bit more passion as well. I think our customers appreciate this about what we do. Not just with our leather iPad Pro cases, but all our designs try to do something different, smart with a palatable passion that is present in each stitch.
These two new features combine with industry leading, hand made build quality and some of the softest, most durable hides available to create a truly special leather iPad Pro portfolio case. The thing that is most striking about the new Folio is not the Pro specific details or the largeness of the case. It is the serious sense of quality is the case exudes.
It feels solid and safe and expensive. It is one of those things in the world that is un-compromised. That is a wonderful feeling. Combine with with our signature distressed, Vintage and pebble grain, black satin hides and you have something amazing.
How to Evolve an iPad Pro Case Design
JKD: You mentioned a recent addition or adjustment to the Folio design. Can you tell us more about that?
MS: Once we started shipping the new 12.9 Folios, a few customers wrote back to tell us they loved the case but they could not access the controls and the notification screens in the horizontal position.
Our frame design allows for access to these areas that are just off the actual screen in the vertical or portrait position but, as we found out, not in the horizontal. This was something that had never come up before but we didn't waste a second reacting and implementing a solution.
Both the new 10.5 and the second production run of the 12.9 iPad Pro Folios will have additional indents in the center area of the frame to allow for access to the control and notification centers when in the horizontal position. I'm very proud of how quickly we were able to respond and implement these important changes.
My goal is to keep our Folios, and all our models really, at the forefront of design and functionality. We want to be the go to product for the professional iPad Pro user. Apple users are the most demanding customers and they are quick to let us know if there is a problem. I am happy to report we have been just as quick to respond.
Another thing I wanted to say about this is that, if you don't use the controls or notification center, especially in the horizontal position, you'll never miss not having the new indents. This seems to be the case for the majority of our 12.9 Folio customers.
But I did have one customer who told me he spends 80 of his user time in horizontal or landscape mode. So for him, not having access to those screens was a deal breaker.
JKD: So how did you resolve it?
MS: I sent him a photo of the second generation 12.9 Folio with the indents in the frame on full display and he loved it. Getting that kind of feedback for us it priceless. Our customers are great at letting me know when I've hit it out of the park or, like in this instance, just missed something. But again, it's how we responded that made all the difference.
JKD: Is there anything else you'd like to add about the new MacCase Premium Leather iPad Pro cases?
MS: I know a lot of folks have waited a long time for the Folios to arrive and it seems like just as many have been waiting for the other three models, our iPad Pro Flight Jacket, Sleeve and Briefcase to get here. The 3 new models are scheduled to ship at the end of this month. So they are coming. I just wanted to thank everyone again for their patience.
I am enjoying reading all the 5 stars reviews that have been coming in for the leather iPad Pro cases. If you have yet to leave yours, please come back and do so. We'd love to know what you think.
JKD: Thank you again for your time.
MS: It's always a pleasure Jody.
