The only issue I have is with a screen protector, the corners do not want to close over it. Without the screen cover, it is perfect. Since not everyone used the screen protector and the case does cover it, this is a very nice case.

Best case out there!

Having researched this carefully I chose the MacCase above all the competition and on receipt was not disappointed. It is beautifully made, well designed and the quality of the leather is superb. While some may consider it an expensive case I can honestly say it is worth every penny! Its truly a quality product.

MacCase iPad Folio Design Timeline

YearDesign Breakthrough
2010MacCase launches the first Premium Leather iPad Folio at the iPad's introduction. Stamped steel frame covered in ultra-suede holds the iPad securely in the case. Two-position stand. No other company had a premium leather iPad folio at launch.
2013MacCase launches the V-Carbon iPad case and V-Carbon iPad mini case — lower price point, tough polycarbonate construction for users who need rugged protection without leather pricing.
2015Integrated front-cover Apple Pencil pocket added to all Premium Leather models at the Apple Pencil's introduction. First leather iPad folio with a purpose-built Pencil pocket.
2016MacCase launches the Custom Program — producing bespoke iPad Folio cases for corporate clients including Jamul Casino, Bent Oak Capital, United Bank, and Opus One Vineyards.
2017Premium Leather models updated from stamped steel frame to impact-absorbing polymer tray. Infinite-angle adjustability introduced. Significantly improved corner and edge protection over the original steel frame design.
2017Magnetic Accessory System (MAS) introduced on Premium Leather 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro models. Four optional attachable/detachable accessories — Apple Pencil Holder, Cable Pouch, Paper Holder, Business Card Holder — attach via precision magnets on the front cover. No other iPad folio case offered this level of customization.
2024MacCase introduces Hybrid iPad Pro cases for 13-inch and 11-inch models. Co-molded polycarbonate and TPU construction — technology borrowed from the MacCase MacBook case line — delivers impact resistance and corner protection beyond what leather or polycarbonate alone can provide.
2024Final production year for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro Gen 5 and 6. MacCase Premium Leather 12.9-inch Folio reaches its definitive form. Limited stock remaining.

Additional Information

The iPad Pro 12.9 6th Generation Case Experience

By this time, you've already bought a cheap 12.9 6th generation iPad Pro case or two, probably more than that. You know how this goes. A $15 plastic case or a $45 "genuine leather" folio from a mass-marketplace site. Looks fine in the photos. Ships in three days. Within six months the hinge is loose, the magnetic closure has lost half its strength, the stitching is pulling away from the corner, and the tray has a crack running from the top 2 corners to the charging port cutout. You buy another one. Same result. Different brand name, same factory, same outcome. This is not bad luck. It is the predictable result of a case designed to a price point rather than a durability standard. The materials are the minimum required to photograph well. The construction is the minimum required to survive shipping. Nothing about a $15 or $45 12.9 iPad Pro case is designed to last two years of daily use because if it did, you wouldn't have to buy another one.

What Actually Fails and Why

The Tray Cracks

Cheap 12.9 iPad Pro folio trays are thin, rigid polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is brittle. When the molds are designed for these cases, the people who are designing them don't take into account the real-world flexing that occurs with the tablet as large as the 12.9. The case is designed in a vacuum. Under repeated flex stress, the plastic fatigues. Every time you open and close the case, every time the iPad is inserted or removed, every time the case is dropped, that tray flexes slightly. Over time, usually 6 to 12 months of daily use, it cracks at the corners or along the port cutouts, the highest-stress points in the geometry. Once it cracks, the 12.9 iPad Pro is no longer held securely. The case is done.

The Stitching Fails

Decorative stitching on cheap 12.9 iPad Pro leather cases is cosmetic. It is not structural. The thread is thin, the stitch count is low, and the leather it passes through is often bonded or split leather, not full-grain. Bonded leather delaminates. Split leather tears. The stitching pulls away from the corner first, then the spine, then the cover. The case does not fail all at once. It fails slowly, visibly, and expensively, because by the time it's obviously broken, you've already carried your iPad in it for months without adequate protection.

The Magnets Weaken

Low-gauss magnets in cheap cases lose holding strength over time. The cover stops staying closed reliably. In a bag, the cover opens against other items and the screen is exposed. This is not a design flaw, it is a materials decision. High-gauss magnets cost more. They are not used in $15 or even $45 12.9 iPad Pro cases.

The Hinge Loosens

The stand mechanism in most cheap folios is a single fold with no engineered stop point. It holds the iPad at one angle, loosely, and gets looser with every use. Within a year it no longer holds position reliably. You prop the iPad against something else. The stand function is gone.

The MacCase Premium Leather 12.9 iPad Pro Case - Built for the Buyer Who Is Done with Cheap Cases

This is a legacy model, the 2021 M1 and 2022 M2 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Apple no longer makes this tablet. We no longer make this case. What remains is limited stock of a product that was built to a standard most cases in this category never reach, now available at $99.95, marked down from $169.95, because we need to move the remaining inventory, not because anything is wrong with it.

The Tray is Polymer, Not Polycarbonate

The MacCase tray is made from impact-absorbing polymer, not rigid polycarbonate. It does not crack. The geometry is engineered with corner torque resistance, the tray shape counteracts the rotational force that causes corners to fail over time. The tray is set back 10mm from the case edge so the structural panel absorbs impact before it reaches the iPad. This tray will outlast the iPad it holds.

The Stitching is Structural, Not Decorative

The contrasting white stitching on the MacCase iPad Pro 12.9 leather case is structural. It passes through full-grain, vegetable-dyed leather, not bonded, not split. Full-grain leather does not delaminate. It does not tear at the stitch points. It patinas over time, developing a unique finish based on how its owner uses it. The stitching will not pull away from the corners. It is not there to look good in a product photo. It is there to hold the case together for years.

The Apple Pencil Protected in the Charging Position

The MacCase 12.9 iPad Pro leather case protects the Apple Pencil while it charges magnetically on the side of the iPad. Most leather folios leave the Pencil completely exposed at the case edge with a brush against a bag strap and it's gone. The MacCase cover geometry shields the Pencil in the charging position without requiring a separate holder or removal. For anyone who uses their Pencil daily, this is the correct solution.

The Magnets are High-Gauss

High-gauss magnets keep the cover closed during transport and trigger sleep/wake reliably. They do not weaken over time at the rate low-gauss magnets do. The cover stays closed in a bag. The screen stays protected.

The Stand Allows 70 Degrees of Adjustability

The iPad Pro 12.9 6th generation case holds position across 70 degrees of adjustability, stable for reading, document review, and Apple Pencil work. It can also be folded fully onto itself for handheld use. The mechanism holds its position.

The Warranty is Limited Lifetime

The MacCase Premium Leather 12.9 iPad Pro Case is backed by a limited lifetime warranty, even at the clearance price. MacCase has been making Apple-specific cases since 1998. The company will be there if you need the warranty. The $15 case seller will not.

FAQs

What is the MacCase leather iPad Pro 12.9 5th and 6th generation case?

The MacCase Premium Leather iPad Pro 12.9 Case fits the 2021 M1 5th generation and 2022 M2 6th generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Handcrafted from ethically sourced, vegetable-dyed full-grain vintage brown leather with an ultra-suede interior. Overall Protection Rating 7.25/10. Individual ratings: Impact 8/10, Scratch 8/10, Corner 8/10, Water 3/10. High-Gauss magnetic closure, 70-degree adjustable stand, and Apple Pencil charging protection. Limited inventory available at $99.95—marked down from $169.95.

What iPad Pro Models Does This Case Fit?

The MacCase Premium Leather 12.9 iPad Pro Case fits the 2021 M1 5th generation and 2022 M2 6th generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro only. It does not fit the 2024 M4 or 2026 M5 13-inch iPad Pro, Apple changed the dimensions and renamed the product line with the 2024 redesign. If you have a 2024 or newer 13-inch iPad Pro, see the MacCase leather 13 iPad Pro case instead.

Is This Case Compatible with the New 13-Inch iPad Pro?

No. Apple redesigned the iPad Pro in 2024, changing the dimensions and renaming it from "12.9-inch" to "13-inch." The MacCase 12.9 case is precision-molded for the 2021 M1 and 2022 M2 12.9-inch dimensions. It will not fit the 2024 M4 or 2026 M5 13-inch iPad Pro correctly. Check your iPad Pro model in Settings → General → About before ordering.

Why Is This Case Priced at $99.95?

The MacCase Premium Leather 12.9 iPad Pro Case is a legacy model offered at $99.95, marked down from $169.95, while supplies last. Black is sold out. Vintage brown full-grain leather remains available. The construction, materials, and warranty are identical to the full-price models: same ethically sourced leather, same polymer tray, same handmade construction, same limited lifetime warranty. If you have a Gen 5 or Gen 6 12.9-inch iPad Pro, this is the last case you'll need to buy for it, at the best price it will ever be.

What Is the Protection Rating?

The MacCase Premium Leather 12.9 iPad Pro Case scores a 7.25/10 overall in the MacCase Protection Rating System.

• Impact 8/10 via offset cover design and impact-absorbing polymer tray,

• Scratch 8/10 via leather exterior and ultra-suede interior,

• Corner 8/10 via precision tray construction,

• Water 3/10 for light incidental exposure.

The offset design places your iPad Pro away from the case edges, maximizing protection at the most vulnerable points. For a leather 12.9 iPad folio at this price point, the impact and scratch scores are exceptional.

What Precision Engineering Makes This Case Different?

MacCase engineers three specific challenges into every 12.9-inch iPad Pro leather case:

• Corner Torque resistance - The tray geometry counteracts the rotational force that causes corners to fail over time, the most common failure point in folio cases.

• Optimized Audio Channeling - Internal geometry preserves full speaker output without blocking ports or muffling sound.

• Offset Design Corner Protection - The tray that holds the iPad is set back from the edge of the case by 10mm. This allows the structural panel between the exterior leather and the interior liner to absorb any energy from an impact or drop before it reaches the iPad's edge. If needed, further protection is provided by the tray itself, being made from impact-absorbing TPU.

No other leather folio case at this price point addresses all three.

What Are the Viewing Angles?

The MacCase Premium Leather 12.9 iPad Pro Case cover folds back and positions as a stand with 70 degrees of adjustability giving you a stable angle for reading, document review, or Apple Pencil work. High-gauss magnets keep the cover closed during transport. The cover can also be folded back fully onto itself like a magazine for handheld use.

Does the MacCase 12.9 iPad Pro case have a warranty?

Yes. The MacCase Premium Leather 12.9-inch iPad Pro Case is backed by a limited lifetime warranty even at the clearance price. MacCase has been handcrafting premium Apple device cases since 1998. That's 28 years of continuous production and a worldwide customer base.
