The Flight Jacket
The Premium Leather MacBook Case: One Bag. Four Sizes. Fifteen Years.
The Flight Jacket carries the MacBook vertically. The long axis of the case is aligned with the long axis of your body. This is not a styling choice. It is an engineering decision. A horizontal bag carries the laptop perpendicular to the long axis of your body, swinging side to side with every step. A vertical bag marries the long axis of the laptop to the body's natural load-bearing axis. It moves with your stride rather than against it. This is the innovation the MacBook Flight Jacket case provided in 2008 and still provides for users today.
The exterior is full-grain or top-grain leather, handcrafted from ethically sourced, vegetable-dyed hides. The Vintage Brown is authentic, unfinished full-grain leather that develops a natural patina with daily use. It doesn't wear out, it wears in. The Black is satin-finished, classic pebble-grain top-grain leather that retains its professional appearance throughout the life of the bag. Both carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Available in four sizes: 13-inch, 14-inch, 15-inch, and 16-inch. Compatible with MacBook Air, MacBook Neo, and MacBook Pro in every current size. The optional Backpack Strap Set converts the Flight Jacket from a shoulder case to a backpack in seconds without removing the laptop. The removable front storage pouch is included with every Flight Jacket.
Long time customer Lawrence DuLac shared his experience of owning multiple Flight Jackets over 10+ years:
"I have three Mac Case products two of which are the MacCase Flight Jacket models. My 10 year old 13" Flight Jacket is going strong, and even doubles as a protector for my iPad Air when needed. The leather is supple and as strong as the day I purchased it. My newest Flight Jacket is a 16" model with a few improvements, such as an added pocket for an AirTag, but still built to the specifications that first led me into buying my first Flight Jacket. I find all three to be the absolute most durable and finely crafted products that I've ever bought. They will outlast the electronics. What's amazing is how as they age they develop their own unique and beautiful patina. And all I do is once a year rub the leather down with some beeswax to keep the leather supple and water resistant. An excellent investment!"
Flight Jacket Accessories
The Premium Leather Backpack Strap Set — Convert Your Flight Jacket to a Backpack
The optional backpack strap set converts any Flight Jacket from a shoulder case to a fully functional leather backpack. The straps attach to the existing hardware on the Flight Jacket without tools. In shoulder mode the Flight Jacket carries vertically at the side. In backpack mode it distributes the load across both shoulders like a normal pack. The backpack strap set is available in the same leather and hardware finish as the Flight Jacket. Over 70% of Flight Jacket customers order the backpack strap set.
The Premium Leather Shoulder Pad — Carry Longer in More Comfort
The MacCase Premium Leather Shoulder Pad attaches to the Flight Jacket's shoulder strap and adds a padded leather cushion at the contact point between the strap and the shoulder. For users who carry the Flight Jacket for extended periods, the shoulder pad reduces strap pressure and distributes the load more evenly across the shoulder. The pad uses natural rubber not aerated plastic to insure a long product life. Handcrafted from the same ethically sourced leather as the Flight Jacket. Available in Vintage Brown and Black to match either Flight Jacket color.
The Premium Leather Replacement Shoulder Strap — Replace or Upgrade
A direct replacement for the Flight Jacket's original shoulder strap, or an upgrade for customers who want a fresh strap on an older Flight Jacket. Handcrafted from the same ethically sourced full-grain and top-grain leather as the Flight Jacket itself. Adjustable length, polished chrome hardware, and the same build quality as the original. Available in Vintage Brown and Black.
Expert Insight: Michael Santoro on Designing the Flight Jacket
On the 15th anniversary of the Flight Jacket's launch, we spoke with MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro about the design of one of the most recognized MacBook cases ever made.
On the Inspiration for the Flight Jacket's Design
"The inspiration for this design was a was a combination of several things. Designing the Jeep Wrangler "TJ" while at Chrysler taught me a lot about how to implement important elements of a design vocabulary. The "face" of the Wrangler is made up of iconic elements such as the round headlights and the vertical bars for the grill opening. The vehicle also needed to have a certain stance. Combining all these elements were a challenge to use in a way that would never get old or look dated. These were some great, real-world design lessons I put into these leather MacBook bags when I first sat down to start sketching. I would say living in California and in the West in general was an inspiration as well. It's a big, beautiful place, big in land mass but also in spirit. I think about the people who came out here 150 years ago. How brave they must have been. I've tried to channel a bit of that spirit into the design as well. In the end, I sat down to design the best case I could. The MacCase Flight Jacket was the right combination of elements, influenced by the right things, filtered through a career of trying to do good work."
On Creating a Timeless Design
"I think every designers strives to create designs that will last but it's not like there's a button or a setting on an app that you just push and a design that never gets old pops out. I wish it was that easy! I think if you commit to doing creative work at a certain level, and you keep pushing yourself and your abilities and stay open to the voices that keep you humble, every once in a while, all the pieces come together and you can achieve something special. I believe that's what happened here. Another major thing I had going for me when I sat down to design this MacBook bag is that the job it needed to do lent itself to my visual skill set. I always make the analogy to music. Some artists have a long career and have some good albums and some not so stellar ones. But the great artists are able to pull all the pieces together to do a St. Pepper, a Born to Run or an American Idiot. Those are the moments you hope, wait and work for. The MacCase Flight Jacket is one of those moments."
On Why Most Laptop Bags Look Dated
"The only reason I can think of why bag manufacturers make their designs look like they are from the 1800s is because they don't have anything new to say. If they did, wouldn't they? Would you buy a car that looked like it was from the 1930s? Or wear a suit or dress from the 1910s? Yet bag makers somehow feel it's OK to purposefully make their products look old and dated. Customers pony up and pay for bags that have no innovation in them at all. So yes, it was most definitely a conscious choice to not make the Flight Jacket look old. Of course, it's infinitely harder to make a design new, contemporary, innovative and beautiful or in this case, timeless as well."
On the Vintage Leather and Contemporary Form
"You take this contemporary design and finish it in our warm, inviting, romantic vintage hides and you have something that speaks to the past as well as the present. The vintage hides speak to the time of handmade things, of items of a certain quality. A MacCase Flight Jacket in vintage evokes this. I think this is one reason the design is still so popular after so many years. It's a blend of everything that people perceive as positive about the past within a compact, modern, well-proportioned form. That's a tough combination to beat."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MacCase Flight Jacket?
The MacCase Flight Jacket is a vertically oriented leather MacBook case designed in 2008 by MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro. It was the first vertical leather laptop case ever made. No other brand offered vertical laptop carry before the Flight Jacket. It carries the MacBook with the long axis of the case aligned with the long axis of the body, distributing the laptop's weight straight down rather than swinging it laterally. It has been in continuous production since 2008, virtually unchanged. iPhone Life magazine voted it Best MacBook Case in 2024. Charles Moore called it "the greatest laptop case ever designed." It is handcrafted from ethically sourced full-grain and top-grain leather and carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
What MacBook models does the Flight Jacket fit?
The MacCase Flight Jacket is available in four sizes: 13-inch, 14-inch, 15-inch, and 16-inch, and is compatible with every current MacBook model: MacBook Air 13" (M4/M5), MacBook Air 15" (M4/M5), MacBook Neo, MacBook Pro 14" (M5), and MacBook Pro 16" (M5 Pro/Max). Each size is precision-cut for the specific MacBook footprint, not a generic "fits up to" sizing. The laptop fits without excess movement inside the compartment.
Is the MacCase Flight Jacket a shoulder bag or a backpack?
Both. The Flight Jacket ships as a vertical leather shoulder case with an adjustable shoulder strap. The optional Premium Leather Backpack Strap Set converts it to a backpack without removing the laptop. In shoulder mode it carries vertically at the side, aligned with the body's natural load-bearing axis. In backpack mode it distributes the load across both shoulders. One bag, two carry configurations. Over 70% of Flight Jacket customers order the backpack strap set. The Flight Jacket can also be worn diagonally across the body as a crossbody bag with the standard shoulder strap.
What is the difference between the Flight Jacket and a standard MacBook bag?
Three differences. First, orientation: the Flight Jacket is vertical. The laptop's long axis aligns with the body's vertical axis. Standard MacBook bags are horizontal. The laptop's long axis runs perpendicular to the body, creating a swinging lateral load. Second, fit: the Flight Jacket is precision-sized for a specific MacBook model. Standard bags are sized generically: "fits up to 15-inch", meaning the laptop can move inside the compartment during transit. Third, materials: the Flight Jacket is handcrafted from ethically sourced full-grain and top-grain leather with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Standard bags use genuine leather, synthetic leather, or nylon with warranties measured in months, not lifetimes.
What warranty does the MacCase Flight Jacket carry?
The MacCase Flight Jacket carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty on workmanship defects during normal use. All three Flight Jacket accessories, the Backpack Strap Set, the Shoulder Pad, and the Replacement Shoulder Strap, carry the same Limited Lifetime Warranty. No MacCase warranty covers normal wear, which on full-grain leather means the development of a patina, a feature, not a defect. MacCase has been making the Flight Jacket since 2008. One customer recently reordered after 11 years of daily use without ever conditioning the leather.
What accessories are available for the MacCase Flight Jacket?
Three accessories are designed specifically for the Flight Jacket. The Premium Leather Backpack Strap Set converts the Flight Jacket from a shoulder case to a backpack using automotive-grade seat belt webbing straps that attach to the existing hardware without tools, ordered by over 70% of Flight Jacket customers. The Premium Leather Shoulder Pad attaches to the shoulder strap and adds a padded leather cushion at the contact point for extended carry comfort. The Premium Leather Replacement Shoulder Strap is a direct replacement or upgrade for the original strap, available in Vintage Brown and Black to match either Flight Jacket color. All three carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Is there a larger version of the Flight Jacket?
Yes. The Premium Leather Briefcase Backpack, known internally as the Flight Case, is the larger sibling of the Flight Jacket. It is a fully structured vertical leather briefcase that converts to a backpack, carries two pieces of hardware simultaneously in the main compartment, and is compatible with all laptops up to 16.2-inch.
