Is This the Best iPad Pro Backpack For Me?
If you're looking for a proven pack design for school, work or just every day use and light weight, protection and versatility are important to you, and you want to spend around $70 for a quality piece, than this might be the best iPad Pro backpack for you.
The iPad Pro 12.9 Backpack is for any 12.9 owner looking for the ultimate in versatility and protection in a lightweight, compact, feature rich design. The combination of the proven protection of the included 12.9" Sleeve ( a $40 value ) with the built in padded compartment of the backpack creates the most protective package available for Apple's largest, heaviest and most expansive tablet.
iPad Pro 12.9 Backpack - Behind the Design
The latest in a series of interviews about the story behind the design of MacCase products. For this interview, we are speaking to MacCase President and Chief Creative Officer Michael Santoro about the company's iPad Backpack.
Jody: You’re often heard telling the staff a product needs to be the best. What is the best iPad Pro Backpack to you?
MS: The best iPad backpack offers unparalleled versatility, comfort and value. It will do everything the owner needs it to do while protecting Apple's largest tablet.
Our goal was to design a simple, lightweight, protective tablet pack that really answered the needs of someone who needs a pack to go the the coffee shop, to school, for commuting to work or even for day use during extensive travel. While trying to have one product answer all of those needs may seem like a big ask, when you distill it down, the needs are all very similar.
The result is what you see before you. It’s a product we’re very proud of and while “the best” of anything is a subject term, we like to say it’s the best backpack for iPad for the money.
An iPad Backpack Designed to Keep You Safe
JKD - The iPad Pro backpack is the company's first nylon model geared towards a tablet. What do you want potential customers to know about this new model?
MS - Like any of our other models, first and foremost, the product protects. It's an unspoken promise we make with every sale. We've done the absolute best we can to insure that under the majority of conditions and situations you may find yourself in, this iPad backpack will protect your investment.
When you combine the layers of fabric and foam of the Sleeve with the pack, you have a system that is incredibly protective. The Apple tablet is one expensive piece of hardware. If you plan on moving it through the world, you'd better be sure it's protected. This new iPad backpack answers that call..
Apple's largest tablet is expansive, heavy and like all iPads, somewhat fragile. Having a separate sleeve to protect it and one that can be used separately, gives you more options and is the ultimate in versatility. Having a separate sleeve really does make a huge difference.
When we designed this new pack we wanted something better than "just what everybody else has". We started with an extremely lightweight, compact design, one that didn't look like you were carrying an expensive tablet. Then added the comfort of our "X" Brace rear padding system and shawl style straps that channels air between the pads to keep you cool.
Additionally, there are twin reflective inserts on each side of the bag. This is the same material used in road signs and firefighter jackets. It is a high visibility material designed to make sure you are seen if you happen to be crossing a street in low light conditions or at night.
On the inside, we created BRIGHTSIGHT 2.0, the next generation of our interior design that allows ambient light to reflect down inside the pack so you can really see what you are looking for.
Many customers have told us BRIGHTSIGHT removes all the stress of searching for things like keys or their phone at night or in a dark parking garage. It works and after using a BrightSight 2.0 pack for a while you'll never want to go back to using a black lined pack again.
The Best Value in an iPad 12.9 Backpack
JDK - I know you like to talk about the value quotient. Why is this pack a great value as well as being super protective?
MS - What makes this pack different from what many other laptop case companies who make backpacks do is that we include one of our custom 12.9 sleeves with the pack.
You're getting two excellent protective, stylish, well designed, well built products for a low price. You get the proven protection of our 12.9 slip case that goes into what is already an excellent backpack plus the accessory pouch for under $80. Show me a better all around deal of the same quality?
I don't know when we crossed over to a culture that only buys on discount vs. buying on quality or value. It's sad. How is buying a $35 bag every other month better or more cost effective than buying an $80 bag once every 4-5 years?
JDK - Are you making a general observation about the state of buying public?
MS - It boggle's my mind how someone can drop $900 on a piece of hardware like a 12.9 Pro, then immediately look for the absolute cheapest case they can find to put it in. Would you park your new Ferrari in a refrigerator box?
Thankfully, these are typically not our customers. But they are out there.
Includes a $40 iPad Pro 12.9 Sleeve
JDK - So getting back to the new iPad Pro backpack, can the sleeve that's included be used separately from the backpack?
MS - Yes! That is what is so great about this package. You can use them separately or together. If you have a rolling bag that you want to use and you want to put your 12.9 in it, you have the sleeve that came with the backpack that you can then use to protect your Apple tablet in the roller.
If you want to use the backpack to take to the gym, you leave the sleeve and the computer at home and throw your gym stuff in the backpack and you're off to the gym. It's the most versatile backpack out there for Apple's largest tablet.
JDK - It seems like the heart of the new model is the 12.9 Sleeve. Tell us more about that.
MS - I would not say it's the heart. I would say the way the two work together is at the heart of what makes this backpack for the 12.9 iPad Pro so great. It presents an unparalleled versatility that is way beyond the price.
JDK - This is the iPad Pro Sleeve that you sell separately for $39.95?
MS - Yes, that's correct. The design is based around the idea of adding protection but doing so at the smallest possible weight penalty. We said, let's increase the protection of your Apple tablet 100% but only increase the overall weight of the pack by 5%. Most customers would take that deal.
We've distilled the components of the Sleeve down to their essence asking what can we keep and what can we do without. Each part serves a purpose.
JDK - You're doing something unique with the logo on the Sleeve. Can you tell us about that?
MS - Yes. Our nylon line is a place where we can try things and have a bit of fun. We struggle with the idea of branding. We want to do it in a way that is somewhat subtle but striking. We developed a unique MacCase text logo using a different font and that's highlighted on the Sleeve's front face.
One the back side of the Sleeve we have the MacCase symbol logo. When you lay the clear gloss on the diamond weave nylon, you get this amazing three dimensional effect.
The logo seems to appear and then disappear as the light hits it. It's striking and subtle. I think it adds a lot of design value to what is in essence a very simple product. The way the logo is executed adds a wow factor where, most of the time, there isn't one.
iPad Pro Pack and Go
JKD - It seems like you have a lot invested in Apple's tablets. There is talk that the tablet is not doing as well as Apple had hoped. Does this worry you?
MS - The 12.9 is physically huge. And it's heavy for something you handle in that way. That's why you need a MacCase sleeve, case or backpack to put it in and keep it safe! (Laughing). I see a lot of people, a lot of creative people, people who like to draw, loving the Pro / Pencil combo.
This idea that everything Apple does has to be a home run is nonsense. It was created by the Apple hating, mainstream media to give Apple an artificially high standard to always have to live up to and then if they don't, the media can say Apple has failed. It's a set up.
Steve Jobs took chances on products all the time. If you want to lead, it's what you have to. My job is to make sure that we deliver on the promise of providing innovative, beautiful, functional protection for their Apple portable executed at a highest level of quality and value. I think the new iPad Pro backpack just does that.
What should I look for when buying an iPad Pro Backpack?
The number 1 thing to look for when buying a backpack to transport your Apple tablet is protection. The pack should have an internal sleeve or compartment to hold, store and protect the tablet. Secondary things to look for are additional storage areas, quality of construction, overall weight and comfort.
How will I know if a backpack will fit my iPad Pro?
One way to insure the backpack you're interested in will hold your Apple tablet is to check the overall size. If the pack is generally larger than your tablet, the tablet should fit.
